To accomplish that, we need more mines, we need more support and work on finding and developing new mines, not more taxes. With the global view to transition to non-carbon-based ener- gy and transportation, our global con- sumption of metals will have to in- crease dramatically, and Alaska should take this opportunity to continue to de- velop its mining industry. Are there causes or non-profits in par - ticular that you support? Foremost, and as we have empha - sized with all of our companies, our ap- proach is to work closely with the com- munities around our projects. At Manh Choh, we have worked closely with the Tetlin Tribe, and Kinross as operator now continues that tradition. We support safety and training pro- grams, education and mentoring in ad- dition to general community support. At a personal level, we are great support- ers of Alaska Resource Education (ARE), GeoForce, and the Alaska Sealife Center. We feel strongly that our young people need to be educated on the contribution of mining and mineral resources to so- ciety in general and to our Alaska econ- omy specifically. Why is AMA important to your compa- ny? And to Alaska mining? AMA represents the voice of mining in Alaska. AMA proactively engages in all discussions as they pertain to min- ing in Alaska, whether they be legis- lation at the State or Federal level or more local issues. The organization has developed constructive working rela- tionships with our Washington DC del- egation, the Alaska legislature, and the Governors Executive Branch, and can effectively communicate our positions on issues that concern mining. They have also worked closely with the Na- tional Mining Association to help edu- cate politicians and the general public about the importance of mining to our modern society. What opportunities do you see for the future, for your company and for mining? As I mentioned earlier, this transi- tion to non-carbon-based energy and transportation will result is a dramatic increase in global consumption of met- als like copper, zinc, cobalt, lithium and rare earths, and Alaska is well posi- tioned to produce most of these metals. In fact, if oil, gas, and coal are to be phased out over the next 50 years, then Alaska must look to metals to sustain our future.
