The companies are working in a partnership with NANA Regional Corp. of Kotzebue, a major landowner in the region. Arctic is 292 miles northwest of Fairbanks and 168 miles east of Kotzebue. The nearest community is Kobuk, 22 miles south- east of Arctic. Another nearby discov- ery, made earlier, is Bornite, 16 miles southwest of Arctic. Fawaz said an existing support camp at Bornite that has been used in previous exploration has been re- activated to support the 2021 drilling, which will continue until September. About 130 people will be at work on
the project this summer, he said, in- cluding 90 employees of Ambler Met- als and 60 to 70 contractor person- nel. Personnel on site will be staged, as the Bornite camp is equipped to handle 90. Arctic is now in the pre-feasibility stage and the Ambler Metal’s goal is to have enough information to apply for a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 404 permit in late 2021. That will begin the federal Environmental Impact Statement process for Arctic, which is expected to take three years, Fawaz said.
