M&G Leather Source Book

Our modernized version of Shagreen is the finest quality leather,

embossed with the rough, granular pattern of the stingray.

For hundreds of years, shagreen was crafted from shark or stingray

hides. The stingray is covered with round, closely set bumps

resembling small pearls. A beautiful material which also offered an

excellent grip—it was used in Asia to embellish the sword handles and

sheaths of samurai warriors. In the 18th century, it came into fashion in

the court of Louis XV of France, where it was a popular finish on toilette

items such as snuff boxes and wig cases. Our modernized version

of Shagreen is the finest quality leather, embossed with the rough,

granular pattern of the stingray. The texture and tonal quality of this

superb, exotic material make it truly unique.
