On Yasmin and his daughters One inevitable question relates to your wife Yasmin. How did you win over one of the most beautiful women in the world and, more importantly, how did you manage to stay married for so long? “I made a point of trying to attract her. I had never tried so hard with anybody in my life and, ultimately, we were right for each other. We were very lucky. We liked the same music, doing the same sort of things and we just hit it off right from the start. But if you’re asking what makes a relationship last, well you’ve got to want to. Sometimes marriages go through hard times and there are only little bits of thread keeping you hanging on. But we want to stay together, we have a great life together, we tolerate each other’s frailties or moods and, above all, we’re friends. We know we can get through the hard times, because we look forward to the good times that are around the corner. And you’ve got to be prepared to compromise…” You have three daughters. Did they inherit your talent and affinity for music? “All three girls – Amber, Saffron and Tallulah – are fantastic musicians. Saffron is a professional musician. She went to university and got a degree in music. They’re actually much more talented than me.”

dition wearing pink leop- ard-print trousers and de- cided to “try Duran Duran out for the summer”. Lit- tle did you know? “They were kind of blood red with black leopard skin print on, but I washed them a few times and they faded to pink. I remem- ber those times in the early ‘80s, when there were a few very good hip clothing shops, but the quality was not great. These were like stuff you’d get at Camden Market, so they looked great when you bought them, but after a couple of times through the washing machine they faded. But that’s not the only thing I turned up with: it wasn’t the pink leopard skin pants that attracted the band to me and me to them. It was my book of lyrics, because they had all this music, but no words and

no top line melodies. That’s what I provided and that’s what got me the job in Duran Duran.” Your family wasn’t thrilled by the fact that you were neglecting your studies for the sake of the band. How did that change? “My father didn’t support the fact that I went to Birmingham Uni- versity to study drama in the first place. He wanted me to do some- thing sensible, like get a job in a bank or an insurance company, an office job like he’d done. So, it was bad enough that I went to univer- sity, and when I dropped out and joined the band, I called him up and had a chat with him and he said “Si- mon, I think you’re throwing your whole life away. I have no sympa- thy for what you’re doing”. He ac- tually cut all communication with

me and didn’t speak to me until the night that we appeared on Top of the Pops, which I think would prob- ably have been about six months after that telephone conversation. So, six months later we’re live on a Thursday evening, broadcasting all across the United Kingdom, and my dad called up afterwards and said “Simon, I get it. No problem, you’re doing a great thing.” It was alright after that.” Did it bother you that, de- spite the awesome lyrics and great music, the story often came down to your appearance? “It didn’t really bother us, be- cause we never really thought that it was about our good looks. For starters, we didn’t think that we were that good looking. We had a very good fashion sense and our
