ry. You might encounter a herd of cows along the way. This also provides a great opportunity to shoot a selfie with them. You will be able to see more than 50 build- ings on five hectares of land, check out the architecture and interior layout, the rooms where they slept, rolled tobacco, raised bees and made dairy products. Reinvig- orate yourself with natural raspberry or cherry juice, which will both refresh and delight you. Stopića Cave After Sirogojno, you will come across the Stopića Cave, just 15 minutes further down the road. Located on the north-eastern side of Zlatibor, this cave of im- posing dimensions began attracting the interest of the expert public at the start of the 20 th century, with the first speleological expeditions conducted here from 1909 to 1913 by the famous Jovan Cvijić, a great geographi- cal researcher and the instigator of scientific speleology in the country. Thanks to its natural features, the pres- ervation of its morphological and hydrological charac- teristics, primarily tufa “bathtubs”, which are unique in terms of size and the way they formed, preserved endem- ic species of cave flora, the natural environment and the beauty of the landscape, Stopića Cave is categorised un- der state protection as a natural monument and a pro- tected natural asset of exceptional importance. The en- trance to this cave, with its impressive dimensions, is among the largest in Serbia. It is 18 metres tall and has a width that varies between 30 and 40 metres. Located at an elevation of 711 metres above sea level, it lies on the south bank of the river Prištevica, the roar of which can be heard constantly as you approach the cave. Mokra Gora Mokra Gora, the Wet Mountain, was proclaimed the world’s best tourist village in 2021! It was selected at the time from among more than 170 competing vil- lages from 75 countries. As a tourist village that nur- tures culture and celebrates tradition, while providing opportunities to develop sustainable tourism and pre- serve biodiversity, it is located between the mountains of Tara and Zlatibor and represents a tourist attraction that’s visited each year by large numbers of domestic and foreign tourists. Interestingly, ranking among the most popular tourist destinations in Serbia aren’t mountains, spas or lakes, but rather ethno-villages, which teleport us back to bygone times and help familiarise us with the way our ancestors lived, while simultaneously re- taining the comfort and benefits of modernity. Drven- grad [Wooden town] is just such an ethno-village. Built by famous film director Emir Kusturica, it was erected on Mokra Gora’s Mećavnik Hill and boasts everything that’s essential to any town, though here it’s admitted- ly all built of wood, as the name suggests. Šargan Eight The Šargan Eight is a narrow-gauge railway that has been traversed by a steam train called Ćira since
1925. Be sure to book your ride in advance, as tickets are often sold out and you’ll later regret missing out. The Šargan Eight track once represented part of the Bel- grade-Višegrad railway, which was decommissioned for regular rail traffic in 1974. The rail tracks were recon- structed in 2002, though only for the purposes of lo- cal tourism, covering a length of 15,440 metres, with a total of as many as 22 tunnels. The train ride will transport you directly back in time, at a speed of up to 50 kilometres per hour, breaking through pine forests and large, picturesque rockfaces that rise alongside the track. The last stop on the roue is Šargan-Vitasi, which is also home to a turntable wheelhouse where you can find respite and refreshment, but where you can also experience something else that’s unusual. Specifically, a huge, brown boulder, referred to as the “cosmic globe”, is located here. It was uncovered in the 1980s in the village of Kremna, at a depth of approximately 3.5 me- tres, and is traditionally believed to be millions of years old. But that’s not all! It is also said that this “cosmic globe” makes wishes related to love come true. All you need to do is touch it and make your wish. Andrićgrad The Andrićgrad complex in the town of Višegrad is just over an hour’s drive from Zlatibor and is worth visiting, if for no other reason than for the ćevapi meat sticks in the Kasaba! From touring the famous bridge on the Drina, via cake shops, alehouses and a gallery, to the local souvenir shop, this place provides rich con- tents for maximum enjoyment.
