S ince its inception, the field of neuroscience has relied on animal models, from fruit flies to macaque monkeys, to better understand the behavior and inner workings of neurons. But while these models have led to remarkable insights about the brain in both health and in disease, they do have limitations. The very genetic differences that place us in different species also make the translation of neurobiological findings in animals to humans challenging—if not outright impossible.
