Lokalno stanovništvo tvrdi da su mokrinska jaja malo jača od ostalih Local residents claim that Mokrin eggs are a little harder than others
T his event originated from the custom of tapping Easter eggs and is held annually on Easter Sunday. And a large number of competitors in senior and junior compe- titions, who believe that their dyed egg is the strongest in the world, will once again gather in Mokrin to celebrate Orthodox Easter this 16 th April. Several hundred thousand chicken, goose and duck eggs are dyed for this occasion. However, the compe- tition concept dictates that only chicken eggs may ap- pear in the competitive part. Also testifying to the im- portance of this event to Mokrin is the fact that a stone statue of a dyed Easter egg decorated with motifs of the village stands at the entrance to the village. For the needs of this festival, tens of thousands of chicken eggs are dyed in Mokrin each Good Friday, with those eggs subsequently used in the competition on East- er Sunday, while an exhibition of children’s works and dyed eggs is held under the scope of the event on Good Friday. The next day, Holy Saturday, sees a gala celebra- tion held in the village square at which artists from the Mokrin district and the Mokrin Women’s Association exhibit their works, after which comes a midnight litur- gy in the Orthodox Church of St. Michael the Archangel. The competition on Easter Sunday starts in the cat- egory of the youngest competitors, after which the main part follows. The event ends with the declaring of the winner, but another traditional custom is practised be- fore the victor is officially announced. Specifically, the winning egg is cut in half using a sabre. One half must be eaten by the jury, while the other half belongs to the winning contestant. The champion is only declared af- ter this tasting. This event was first held in Mokrin in 1993. The birthplace of Miroslav Antić and Raša Popov. this village in the municipality of Kikinda is located approximately 150 kilometres from Belgrade. The village is also known as the home of Mokrin House, which brings together digital nomads and entrepreneurs from different parts of the world seeking to spend their working hours in a modern complex located in a rural setting. Mokrin also became the first digital village in Serbia last year, so even if you can’t make it for Easter, there are certainly plen- ty of reasons to visit this interesting Vojvodina village.
