The splendour and importance of Serbian monasteries can be felt as soon as one enters these holy places that undoubtedly deserve to be included in every tour of Serbia

S erbian monasteries rep- resent building complex- es that have stood as the most important pillars of society for centuries. And apart from their amazing architec- ture and icons, they are also particu- larly significant as the final resting places of the mortal remains of the most important figures in Serbian history, including saints, rulers and creative artists. This selection pre- sents only a small part of the many sacral sanctuaries that Serbia pos- sesses, which serve to preserve the tradition of the Serbian Orthodox faith, and might inspire you to visit them and convince yourself of their magnificence. Žiča This endowment of Stefan the First-Crowned is located in the vicin- ity of the city of Kraljevo. Žiča was the seat of the Serbian archbishopric after the acquiring of autocephaly in 1219. The coronations of seven Ser- bian kings of the Nemanjić dynasty took place at this medieval monas- tery, and it is interesting to note that individual entrances to the monas- tery were created for each of these kings, only to be walled up immedi- ately after they were crowned. Žiča is located just six kilometres from Kraljevo, on one of the most beauti- ful and fertile plains. And apart from coronations of kings, it is also a sig-

nificant site due to the fact that it housed the seat of the autocephalous Serbian archbishopric after the Serbi- an Orthodox Church gained its inde- pendence. The monastery was devas- tated in an attack by Tatars that took place at the start of the last decade of the 13 th century, after which the seat of the archbishopric was transferred to the Church of the Holy Apostles in Peć, while the monastery itself was restored in the early 14 th cen- tury by King Milutin. The first thing that one notices when seeing this imposing building is its colour, as there aren’t many monasteries in Serbia, or anywhere in the world, that have such an intense red col- our. Specifically, although Žiča was built at the behest of the first king of Serbia from the Nemanjić dynasty, his brother, Saint Sava, also played an important role. After his stay on Mount Athos and return from Nica- ea to Serbia in 1220, he ordered cer- tain changes be made to the architec- tural appearance of the church. The church was painted red in the third decade of the 13 th century. Gračanica Gračanica Monastery was erect- ed in 1321 at the behest of King Mi- lutin, who dedicated it to the As- sumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to tradition, Milutin built this monastery as a sign of grati- tude to an angel who appeared to
