Age really is just a number New Stones arriving Despite Mick Jagger having recently turned 80, he was full of energy in announcing, together with Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, the new album Hackney Diamonds, which is set for release on 20 th October

the 2021 death of drummer Char- lie Watts. The band appeared onstage with Fallon at the Hackney Empire Thea- tre in front of a live audience. Wood explained that the group had hit the studio just before Christmas 2022, recording 23 tracks. Hackney Dia- monds, which will be released on 20 th October, ultimately features 12 of those tracks. “Ever since Charlie is gone it’s dif- ferent, he’s number four. It would have been a lot harder without Char- lie’s blessing,” said Keith Richards, ex- plaining that Steve Jordan, Charlie Watts’s own chosen replacement, is featured on drums. Jagger added that the album includes two tracks that were recorded in 2019 with Charlie, who passed away at the age of 80 in December 2021. One song even features longtime former bassist Bill Wyman. There was another featured artist revealed during the livestream: Lady Gaga duets on the track Sweet Sound Of Heaven (Judging by Fal- lon’s surprised reaction, Wood per- haps wasn’t yet supposed to dish that info). The livestream concluded with the premiere of the music video for the first single, Angry, which features Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney. The song is classic Stones, and the vid- eo depicts Sweeney rocking out in a red convertible as she’s serenaded by billboards of the Stones in their many eras over the years. Hackney Diamonds has already been highly anticipated as the band teased its new era—the Stones’ fa- mous lips logo was projected near sev- eral famous monuments around the world, signalling the big announce- ment. Though Hackney Diamonds is the first original Stones release in nearly two decades, the band certain- ly hasn’t been resting on its laurels. They last year embarked on the Six- ty Tour, to commemorate the band’s 60 th anniversary. And despite front- man Jagger recently becoming an oc- togenarian, the Stones show no signs of slowing down any time soon. And we will never get tired of the unri- valled “Rolling stones” either!

Three guys with a com- bined age of little less than 250 years emerge, but they move nimbly, really smile and tell 21 st century jokes, and they also announce a new album to be released on 20 th October. We might even scoff at the notion of some octogenarians recording rock’n’roll tracks and tour- ing, if that trio weren’t called Mick, Keith and Ronnie. Oh yeah, we have new Stones arriving!

How phenomenal it was to see such strength of spirit and body not even being hidden by Jimmy Fallon, who hosted the three greats when they decided last month, live and with the whole world watching, to tell the story of how Hackney Dia- monds emerged and why they chose to record it after a break of 18 years. It will be the band’s first studio al- bum of original material since 2005 (A Bigger Bang), and the first since
