predak i u „oblasti naizmenične elek- trične struje“. Za one koji nisu upuceni u nauku, ime zgrade već daje dovolj- no zasluga tamo gde su zasluge odav- no zakasnile. Radio Wave Building, Manhattan Where Tesla invented the radio Ask most people who invented the ra- dio and they’ll say Marconi. But this isn’t accurate. The correct answer is Niko- la Tesla. The Italian engineer did file his patent for the radio on 28 th July, 1904, but Tesla had filed his own patent for the same device years before, on 2 nd September, 1897, and it was even ac- knowledged in 1900. Marconi nonethe- less received the Nobel Prize in 1909, because he had been the first to send a radio signal across the Atlantic back in 1901. The fact that his achievement was based on the discoveries of Rudolf Hertz and Nikola Tesla was overlooked. Marconi’s patent was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 1943, in fa- vour of Nikola Tesla, who had died earli- er that same year.
ski, visokofrekventni transformator. During his 60 years of living and wor- king in New York, Tesla occupied a number of laboratories througho- ut the city. His first lab was in the Fi- nancial District at 89 Liberty Street, where Tesla perfected the design for his AC motor and earned his first pa- tent. In 1889, after returning from a brief residency in Pittsburgh, Tesla rented a new laboratory at 175 Grand Street, after learning that German physicist Heinrich Hertz had dete- cted radio waves. The discovery ex- cited Tesla and it was at this lab that he created the Tesla coil, a high-vol- tage, high-frequency transformer. His next laboratory, at 33-35 South Fifth Avenue, which is today known as LaGuardia Place, was where he completed his most important work on wireless lighting. He gave demon- strations to his friends, including fa- med architect Stanford White and author Mark Twain, but the lab cau- Nikola Tesla Labs Where Tesla changed the world ght on fire in 1895 and he lost all the plans and projects he was wor- king on at the time. In July of the sa- me year, Tesla rented out yet another lab, this time located at 46 East Ho- uston Street. Here he learned abo- ut X-rays, developed a radio-contro- lled boat and worked on a system to transmit power around the world wit- hout the use of wires.
The Radio Wave Building houses the bar Patent Pending. According to the website: “The ‘waves’ which guided you here (GPS) and surround you now (WiFi) were envisioned by Tesla more than a century ago… We toast to him and the countless others that think outside the box, persevering against all odds”. The walls, lighting and de- sign of the menu are all reminiscent of Tesla. Here you can order cocktails with names like White Lightning, Eclec- tic Messiah, Light Me Up or The ‘Twain, Too, which has Serbian rakija as one of the ingredients! Speaking for Elevate, bar own Ryan McKenzie says that he named his venue “Patent Pending” as an homage to the great Nikola Tesla. “It is a great honour for us to carry his reputation every evening and we hope that, were he here, he would sit in a dark corner and sip a cocktail along- side the other guests.” Patent Pending Where Tesla will help you with cocktails
That said, not everyone – or every- where – has forgotten about Tesla’s contributions to the creation of radio. In 1977, the appropriately-named Radio Wave Building in Lower Manhattan be- gan displaying a plaque thanking Tesla for his work in the field of radio technol- ogy. Tesla, who had lived in the building in 1896, during its former incarnation as the Gerlach Hotel, experimented with radio waves there. The plaque notes Te- sla’s advancements in the “field of al- ternating electric current”. For the sci- ence-uninitiated, the building’s name gives sufficient credit where credit is long overdue.
