Baš kod tih sugra- đana možete često videti primer izraza „high/low“, u prevodu – od velikih brendova do sekend henda, a to je divno. Čini me srećnim što je za takav stajling potrebno ima- ti ukusa i to je jako retko.Ti ljudi su zapravo „indirektni“ predstav- nici trenda. Od njih u isto vreme crpim ideje i pozajmljujem recimo siluete (forme), a u isto vreme, oni su ti na kojima bih želeo da vidim komade koje dizajniram. Baš oni čine Njujork jednom od modnih prestonica. Koje su skrivene insaj- derske lokacije koje sva- ko mora da obiđe ako do sada nije bio u Njujorku? – Ako pričamo o nekome ko nikad nije bio u Njujorku, ta oso- ba će najčešće želeti da obiđe ono o čemu svi govore, ono što su reci- mo videli na televiziji. I sam sam to iskusio prilikom obilaska neke nove zemlje ili grada, ali ako bi taj grad u meni probudio dublje interesova- nje, uvek bih se vraćao. To je mož- da jedan od načina da se dođe do tih, kako kažete, insajderskih me- sta. Divno je ako imate prijatelja koji živi u Njujorku da vam poka- že baš to, u suprotnom imate ve- like šanse da završite samo sa sli- kom ispred Empajer stejt bildinga na Instagramu, što bi bila velika šte- ta. Morate da se izgubite u gradu. Da li Bruklin i dalje no- si titulu inkubatora krea- tivne energije? – Bruklin nije scenografija, on je priča za sebe. Kad mi prijate- lji dođu u goste, većinu vremena provodimo baš u Bruklinu. Tu su ti autentični restorani, kafeterije, galerije, mali-veliki šopovi koji ne liče na ono čega ima u tržnim cen- trima, već mesta gde žive ljudi ko- ji imaju, čini mi se, planove za bo- lju budućnost svih nas. Menhetn je predivan, ali ako ne istražite i Bruklin, niste bili u Njujorku.
asked a designer originally from our lands who currently lives and works in New York to share with us his insights into everything that makes this inspiring mega- lopolis so irresistible to artists of all disciplines. Dragoslav Rajičić’s creations can be bought by trendy New Yorkers at the Selima store, one of the most beloved shopping addresses in the West Village. His previous Game Boy collection at this concept store sold out in less than a week (interestingly, some of the unique items were bought by famous singer-songwriter Sam Smith). Prior to moving on to creat- ing his next collection, he sat down with us for a virtual matcha latte and to tell us what’s currently hot in the Big Apple. How inspiring is New York for those working in art and fashion – and, on the flip side, how demanding and harsh is it? “New York helps me a lot, be- cause I understand and love it. I’ve been lucky enough to devel- op a sense of belonging, to meet several different “faces” of this city, to recognise its beauty and utilise that in my creative work. When it comes to harshness, that can al- so be recognised as inspiring, and New York has plenty of it.” Are there places that you find particularly inspiring? “I’m very inspired by places that are still “secret”. Such places are discovered spontaneously, over the years, and New York really has a lot of them. The Green-Wood Cem- etery is in Brooklyn and is simulta- neously a graveyard and a beautiful park. It’s not that unknown, but re- mains a very intimate place. There you can find tranquillity, organise a picnic and enjoy the wonderful view of Manhattan, and it is right there that the great Basquiat is buried.” You often post images on your Instagram profile of fantastically dressed resi- dents of the city with the caption “New Yorkers are the coolest”. How did that fascination begin? “Completely spontaneously and

without a plan! “New Yorkers are the coolest” has become a mini concept on my Instagram profile, which leads to me receiving plenty of reactions, which is also why I nurture it, but ex- clusively when I recognise value that I want to share with others. I find that it’s in fashion that I recognise value, not in a magazine editorial, but in fashion that doesn’t follow a trend, doesn’t belong to a decade and represents something timeless. It is precisely among these fellow New Yorkers that you can often see ex- amples of ‘High/Low’, which trans- lates as ‘from major brands to sec- ond hand’, and that’s wonderful. It makes me happy that such styling re- quires one to have taste, and that’s a great rarity. Those people are actually “indirect” representatives of what’s trendy, and I don’t think we’re even aware of that. I simultaneously draw ideas from them and borrow, for ex- ample silhouettes (forms), while at the same time they are the ones I’d like to see sporting the pieces I de- sign. They are precisely what make New York one of the world’s fash- ion capitals.” What are some hidden in- sider locations that every- one must visit if they’ve never previously been to NYC? “If we’re talking about someone
who’s never been to New York, they will most commonly want to visit places that everyone talks about; what they have seen on television. I’ve experienced that myself when visiting some new country or city, but if that city awakens in me a deep- er interest, I would always return. That’s perhaps one of the ways to reach those, as you say, “insider” places. It’s wonderful if you have a friend living in New York to show you just that, because otherwise it’s highly likely you’ll end up with just a photo in front of the Empire State Building on Instagram, which would be a great shame. You have to lose yourself in the city.” Does Brooklyn still hold the title of an incubator of creative energy? “Brooklyn is not stage scenery; it is a story in its own right. When friends come to visit, we spend most of our time in Brooklyn. It is there that there are those authentic res- taurants, cafeterias, galleries, small- big shops that don’t resemble the kind of outlets that exist in shop- ping centres, but rather places that are home to people who, it seems to me, have plans for a better fu- ture for all of us. Manhattan is won- derful, but if you don’t also explore Brooklyn, it’s like you haven’t even been to New York.”
