Beaches & summer holidays If you opt to take your summer holiday here, Málaga’s most beautiful beach- es are Malagueta, Sacaba, Pedregalejo and El Palo. Playa La Malagueta is clos- est to the city and extends alongside Picasso Promenade. An urban peb- ble and sand beach, it starts beside the pier located next to the lighthouse in the port. Small restaurants, known as “chi- ringuitos”, offer lounge chairs for hire, toilets and changing rooms, as well as a wide selection of food and drinks. Sa- caba Beach, in the western part of the city, is known as a very quiet and tran- quil beach, and here you’ll definitely find ample space to relax on the sand with- out being surrounded by crowds. Pe- dregalejo Beach is located in a former fishing village that is today among Mála- ga’s fanciest and most popular areas, known for its many seafront bars and restaurants. El Palo Beach is the furthest from the city, but boasts some of the best restaurants, offering delicious fish dishes and other seafood specialities. Flamenco & festivals The nightlife of Málaga has a great rep- utation, so don’t miss out on the chance to spend an evening in one of its fa- mous flamenco clubs, where a good time is guaranteed until the early hours.

The city’s tourist season gets under- way with the start of the Easter holidays, which features mass processions that see saintly figures paraded through the streets, with an obligatory figure be- ing the city’s own patron saint: the Vir- gen de la Victoria [Virgin of the Victo- ry]. Numerous festivals are held during the summer months, when Málaga wel- comes the most tourists, the most fa- mous of which being the August Fair, al- so known as the Málaga Fair (The Feria de Agosto or Feria de Málaga), which commemorates the end of Moorish rule over the city and runs for a week from the second Friday in August. A distinc- tive characteristic of this festival is that the people dress up in typical flamen- co-style costumes and celebrations are held on the streets of the city’s histor- ic centre, where it is customary to drink the local sherry, fino, and dance flamen- co, which is also fino, or rather nice.
