also more comedic to see it from the vantage point of the burglars. You mentioned Woodward and Bernstein and the fa- mous film All The Presi- dent’s Men... Could you have also done this se- ries as a straight up thrill- er? Why was satire right for this? JT: I would argue that you couldn’t have gone another way because they were so stupid, and so were the plans themselves. They had such crazy black ops ideas that it naturally wants to go towards comedy more than drama. I’m sure there is a dramatic version of it, but I think it would be inaccurate. WH: And maybe a little bor- ing (laughs). When you play charac- ters like this, whatever you might think of them, do you develop an affection for them as you go along? JH: Absolutely. I fell more and more in love with them the more we played them. But again, Liddy was this optimistic shiny penny of a guy and it was sort of fun to play. Woody, did you feel the

T his satirical political drama begins in 1971, when the White House hired former CIA and FBI agents Hunt and Liddy to investigate the Pentagon Papers leak. Despite having failed to do so, the pair are included in the Committee to Re-elect the President, where they plot several unbelievable covert opera- tions, including bugging the offices of the Democratic National Commit- tee at the Watergate office complex. Proving that history is sometimes stranger than fiction, White House Plumbers brings to light the series of lesser-known events that led to one of America’s greatest political crimes. The lead roles are played by Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux, so we begin our dual interview with them by asking if there was a lot about Watergate that they didn’t know prior to this project… JT: The whole thing. Everyone knows there was a break in and that’s what kicked it off, we sort of all know the B side of it, which was Bob Wood- ward and Carl Bernstein chasing the story down as investigative report- ers on The Washington Post, but this is way more hilarious than this bor- ing Washington Post story that everyone keeps going on about (laughs). WH: There’s a lot that surprised me about it. There’s so much that I had no idea about.
