It is famous for its cave waterfall, but especially for its tufa tubs that represent a true ge- omorphological rarity around the world. They add a touch of special value to this speleological beauty and represent its hallmark. It is al- so home to the unique ‘Spring of Life’ subterranean waterfall. Vernjikica Cave Vernjikica is a dry limestone cave located at a relatively high el- evation. At around 700 metres long, it has exceptional subterra- nean spatial dimensions and cave jewellery. Named after its numer- ous collapsed columns of huge di- mensions, Vernjikica is symbolised by an 11.5-metre-tall stalagmite dubbed The Colossus. The mar- ble hall located at the very bottom of the cave system and boasting the highest quality cave jewellery is well worth the effort required to reach it. Cerje Cave Cerje Cave (Provalija cave) rep- resents a cave system that encom- passes a total length of 7,149 me- tres, running from the village of Cerje and ending with a vertical karst pit in the village of Kravlje. Around 3,400 metres from the en- trance is a syphon lake. It is rich in cave jewellery formations that ex- tend along its entire length and reveal a wonderful subterrane- an realm comprising corridors and halls with an average height rang- ing from between 15 and 40 me- tres and hiding hundreds of mor- phological and hydrological forms of the most varied shapes, sizes and colours, as well as attractive speleothems. Entry is only possi- ble with the accompaniment of a professional caving guide, in small groups and with special equipment that can be hired immediately be- fore entering the cave. Risovača Cave Risovača Cave is located with- in a hill of the same name at the very entrance to the town of Aranđelovac, above the north bank of the river Kubršnica. Ac- cording to palaeontologists, the area around this cave was home to at least 20 species of mammals during the last Ice Age, some of which have since gone extinct. Risovača is otherwise one of the oldest archaeological sites on the Balkan Peninsula. Archae- ologists have found tools made from stone and bone within this cave, and it is believed that Nean- derthals lived in the cave during the period between 50,000 and 35,000 years ago. The fossilised remains of animals and the tools of caveman found here are today preserved at the National Muse- um in Aranđelovac. Potpećka Cave Potpećka Cave is located in the village of Potpeće, 14 km from Užice. The entrance to this cave itself ranks among mon- umental works of nature. A gi- ant horseshoe-shaped opening that has a width of 12 metres at the bottom and 22 metres at the top, its entrance reaches a height of 50 metres, making it the tallest cave entrance in Ser- bia. It was naturally carved out of a limestone cliff with a ver- tical section that’s 72 metres high. The path leading in and out of the cave includes more than 700 carved steps.
who used it as a hiding place for his plundered treasure, represents an extremely valuable speleolog- ical object. The cave has been de- clared a Category 1 natural monu- ment and is classified as a site with geoheritage significance to the Bal- kans. It is located in eastern Ser- bia, approximately 200 kilometres from Belgrade and three km from the centre of Majdanpek. Its ex- plored corridors and channels cover a total length of 2,304 me- tres, of which 633 have been ar- ranged with paths for visitors. Its cave jewellery formations have an exceptional white colour, mostly due to being covered with crystals, which is why this cave is justifiably dubbed the White Queen of Ser- bian Caves. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 8 °C, with 100% humidity.
