Split hosts numerous cultural events, including film and theatre festivals and exhibitions, while the city is also home to several museums. The Museum of Ivan Meštrović (Meštrović Gal- lery) is located in one of Split’s most beautiful areas, on the promenade named after him, and is dedicated to preserving, researching and promoting the life and works of this prominent sculptor. The works of this world-renowned artist are preserved in the collections of museums and galleries around the world, while the monuments he created continue to amaze observers with their monumentality. Split locals have even opened a museum dedicated to the series Game of Thrones, which was partly filmed here (no, it wasn’t only shot in Dubrovnik). Located alongside the street where scenes for the series were shot, in close proximity to Diocletian’s Cellars, it ex- hibits dragons, life-size models of the main characters and their costumes, replicas of cities and other symbols and details that will delight every GOT fan. Moreover, representing the city of Meereen, which is conquered in the series by Princess Daenerys, is the Fortress of Klis, a spectacular medieval fortification that’s just 20 minutes from Split and is also well worth a visit. Sea and upland tour Bačvice Beach is the city’s main and most popular beach, while the beaches of Kašjuni and Bene are locat- ed at the foot of Marjan hill. Apart from the island it- self, we also recommend that you explore the beautiful town of Trogir, which is known specifically for its Vene- tian architecture. If you want to flee the sweltering ur- ban bustle and experience Split from a slightly different perspective, we recommend that you visit Marjan hill. The Adriatic Sea and this green hill are at their most har- monious during the summer months, adding to the al- ready great charm of this city. Wherever you happen to find yourself walking on this hill, you can stop and en- joy beautiful views, refreshing shade and the scent of the surrounding pine forest. Split is also home to the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, which was the first national institution dedicated to marine research. Flavours of the Mediterranean The antique scenery of the city is given a modern look thanks to bars, restaurants and retail outlets that make this a very modern and vibrant city. Split has al- so become a high-quality gastronomic destination in re- cent years. Here you can enjoy seafood prepared superb- ly, good wines, but also excellent coffee and ice cream. By exploring the hidden streets of the city, you will find res- taurants that aspire to become Michelin-starred eateries and offer exquisite Mediterranean and Dalmatian cuisine. So, if you like the combination of interesting histo- ry, various activities, good food and beautiful beaches, this city and the surrounding area should be included on your list of must-see destinations.
