Assos The ancient Greek coastal town of Assos is another site in Çanakkale province to be inclu- ded on UNESCO’s World Herita- ge List, and it is perhaps one of the most scenic ancient cities in modern Türkiye. It is situa- ted on a rocky hill some 17 kilo- metres south of the district of Ayvacık. Aristotle arrived in As - sos in 348 BC and established a philosophical school where he taught for three years. The acropolis hosts the earliest Do- ric temple in Anatolia, a Tem- ple of Athena, fortification walls and a Turkish mosque from the early period. You can follow the path leading to the lower city and visit the agora, the gymna- sium, and enjoy great views of Lesbos from the theatre. With its beautiful nature and ancient ruins, Assos is a regular back- drop used for filming Turkish TV series, while it is an alluring spot for divers thanks to its cle- an seas and rich underwater world. Bozcaada Located near Çanakkale, at the mouth of the Dardanelles Stra- its, Bozcaada is Türkiye’s third largest island, covering an area of 40 square kilometres. Upon arrival on the island, you are greeted by the castle overloo- king the harbour. You can wan- der its narrow streets between beautiful and colourful houses, then head to the Çiçek Patis- serie for some Kavala cookies, one of the famous delicacies of the island, or to try ice cre- am flavoured with the famous local fragrant lavender. If you’re there at sunset, head to the Po- lente Lighthouse to enjoy some wonderful views. Wine seems as plentiful as water on this island and a tour reveals many vineyards and wine cellars. There are good sand beaches at Ayazma, Poyraz and İğdelik, while jazz lovers will enjoy Sep- tember’s annual festival.
Çanakkale is located at the en- trance of the Dardanelles Stra- it, which connects the Aege- an and Marmara seas. It is a place that has welcomed lea- ders, commanders, warriors, artists, philosophers, explorers, and poets. The lands of the le- gendary Trojan War and Darda- nelles Campaign are located on both sides of the Dardanelles Strait, which would much la- ter divide the city of Istanbul to form a city that separates Eu- rope and Asia. Troy is thought to have been located at the edge of the bay where the rivers Karamenderes and Dümrek reach the Aegean. The city, which was destroyed by wars and natural disasters, gradually lost its importan- ce and was finally abandoned. Troy Museum today welcomes visitors at the entrance to the Ancient City of Troy, which was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List back in 1998. The museum depicts and expla- ins the life and archaeological history of Troy and its cultu- res through artefacts recovered during excavations. Çanakkale is also famous wor- ldwide for the battle that took place here following the outbre- ak of World War I. The Allied fleet’s attempt to force passa- ge through the Dardanelles in February 1915 failed and was followed by an amphibious lan- ding on the Gallipoli Peninsula in April 1915. The objective was to conquer Istanbul (then sti- ll known as Constantinople), but the Turkish Army, under the leadership of then comman- der Kemal Atatürk, managed to hold off the land offensive and the allies were forced to wi- thdraw in January 1916, after eight months of heavy fighting. The battlefields are now occu - pied by a national park conta- ining numerous monuments that were registered on the UNESCO World Heritage Tenta- tive List in 2014.
