ANDALUZIJA ANDALUSIA

CAMINITO DEL REY You now probably expect us to imme- diately rush on to the fashionable Mar- bella, to the sea, among the yachts and villas of the world’s jet-set, but we will remain in the hinterland, paying hom- age to the cliffs and mountains in an- other completely surreal place. Admit- tedly, here we had to place helmets on our heads and swallow some fear, but only initially. The “King’s Little Path” as Caminito del Rey translates into Eng- lish (King Alfonso XIII traversed it), is on- ly around a metre wide, carved into rock over 100 metres above the river, while it passes through an impressive gorge carved by the flow of the river Guadal- horce, between huge slabs of layered limestone. Interestingly, the natural environment is such that it isn’t possible to reach the entrance by any means of trans- port, though that doesn’t seem to be known by the sat-nav. The lady’s voice was constantly telling us to turn right where a ramp had been placed on the dirt road. As we had more trust in our own eyes than her guidance, we set off on foot for about a kilometre and a half, all alone as we made our way through a beautiful forest, with a view of the riv- er far and deep below. We reached the entrance, where they gave us helmets and walkie-talkies to listen to what the guide was saying, because you can’t traverse this elevated walkway alone.

This experience is really a thankless one to recount. That’s firstly because you are hit by a rush of adrenaline, because no one feels indifferent walking against a rock face like a goat, while 100 metres below flows an emerald green river. But it’s precisely because of that river, and the nature that consumes you with all its powerful magic, that it’s impossible to faithfully portray that beauty. Fear very quickly gives way to pure, organ- ic amazement. Of course, if you gen- erally have a fear of heights, this isn’t the place for you, though the actual walk along the almost eight-kilometre- long path, which takes slightly over two hours, isn’t gruelling and ends with you crossing a beautiful bridge. You should keep in mind that the route isn’t circular and that you’ll end up a long way from where you left your car, but everything is organised well and a bus will take you back to your starting point. There are also no toilets or any kind of facili- ties along the path, so make sure you’re armed with enough water.
