HYBRID HEATING PROGRAMME
“The programme seeks to understand the carbon reduction, consumer and network impact from installing large numbers of HHPs in Northern Ireland and will offer up to 115 eligible applicants an allowance of £4,000 towards the cost of installing a hybrid heat pump system.”
impact from installing large numbers of HHPs in Northern Ireland and will offer up to 115 eligible applicants an allowance of £4,000 towards the cost of installing a hybrid heat pump system. The allowance is available across the whole of NI to both existing gas users and new customers converting from oil heating. The programme will be weighted to incorporate a wide variety of NI households to understand how HHPs perform in different housing types and how factors such as EPC rating, heat loss, occupant characteristics and lifestyle affect HHP performance. In addition, the performance of HHPs and gas boilers in participating homes will be monitored up to December 2028, with the resulting data used to assess carbon emission reduction, impact on household energy bills, effect on customer comfort and usability, and the seasonal performance factor of HHPs in comparison to other low-
carbon heating technologies in NI. The programme will also be seeking 55 households switching from oil to gas to also install associated monitoring equipment, to allow data sets to be compared across the trial period. These households will be rewarded with a £300 cashback for their participation in the programme. This exciting project will allow us to understand the impact of a rollout of HHPs across NI on the gas and electricity networks and help inform the development of regional low- carbon heating policy. After a successful tender process, local MCS-registered installation company McGaffin Mechanical has been appointed to deliver the scheme on behalf of NI’s three DNOs. The heating programme will be open for participant registration of interest soon, with the first installations targeted for June 2026.
I look forward to keeping you updated on the trial progress through the installation and monitoring phases.
