Why heat pumps fail

A new book helps heating engineers understand why heat pump systems can underperform with helpful tips on how to maximise efficient operation. Why Heat Pumps Fail: The Engineering Mistakes That Kill Performance — And How to Avoid Them has been released by UK heat pump systems and controls specialist Craig Moreton. It explores the practical engineering, hydraulic and control issues that stop heat pumps delivering expected performance in real installations. Written for heating engineers, heat pump installers, plumbers, contractors, specifiers, consultants, manufacturers and commissioning engineers, the book examines why heat pump systems often underperform once installed. It argues that many poor outcomes are caused by design and application issues, including excessive flow temperatures, poor hydraulic design, weak emitter matching, incorrect buffer application, poor controls, domestic hot water behaviour, cycling, defrost and commissioning assumptions. For readers across Ireland and Northern Ireland, the book also looks at the practical transition from traditional boiler-led systems to low-temperature heat pump design. www.amazon.co.uk/WHY-HEAT- PUMPS-FAIL-Engineering/dp/ B0GWXMS8QS

Open Doors at Clogher Wastewater Treatment Works.

Open Doors water treatment tour

NI Water, DLJ Water and Tetra Tech have welcomed more than 80 young people to Clogher Wastewater Treatment Works as part of this year’s Construction Futures Open Doors initiative. It was held during Open Doors Week, which is coordinated by Construction Futures NI as part of Build UK’s nationwide initiative and ran from March 23-28. A first session for primary school pupils offered demonstrations and an introduction into wastewater treatment, inspiring pupils to consider future STEM pathways. A second session was tailored for older

students and higher-level apprentices, with presentations from NI Water and Deane Public Works. Students got to see firsthand the different civil and mechanical engineering elements of the site. A tour covering mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control and automation elements of the new facility was delivered by Avove Ireland. DLJ Water is a long-term joint venture between Deane Public Works, Lowry Building & Civil Engineering and Avove Ireland. www.ConstructionFuturesNI.com

H&A Group wins sustainability award

Magherafelt-based H&A Group has been named a winner at the Aico Community Awards 2026, taking home Sustainability Project of the Year for its Low Carbon Retrofit Programme delivered in partnership with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

The award was presented in Birmingham on April 16 and recognises projects that deliver meaningful environmental and social impact. H&A Group’s initiative has already upgraded more than 100 homes across Northern Ireland with energy-efficient improvements, helping to reduce carbon emissions while lowering energy costs for residents. The programme is also contributing to improved living conditions, creating warmer, more comfortable homes and supporting stronger, more sustainable communities. H&A Group credited the achievement to the dedication and innovation of its team, whose efforts have been central to the programme’s success, and welcomed the recognition from Aico in highlighting projects that make a tangible difference. www.thehagroup.com L-R: Sean McBride, Martin Collins and Benny Quinn, H&A Group.
