BOILER EFFICIENCY

MORE THAN 1.44 MILLION HOMES IN IRELAND ARE OVER 15 YEARS OLD AND MAY BE LOSING HEAT AND MONEY DUE TO AGEING BOILERS, ACCORDING TO THE LATEST CENSUS… Replacing old boilers could save 30%

Many of the 1,445,514* homes across Ireland built before 2010 are likely to be using older heating systems, and paying higher energy bills than necessary, according to Complete Plumbing Solutions. The Cork-based plumbing services provider analysed figures in the 2022 Irish Census to identify how

many Irish homes were built before 2010, and which counties might benefit most from a boiler change. Replacing old boilers can save homeowners upwards of 30% on their energy bills each year, according to Complete Plumbing Solutions Founder Sean Richardson, with older systems often becoming less efficient as components wear out. “If your boiler is 15 years or older, it could be costing you more than you realise in heat loss and higher energy bills,” says Sean. “Modern boilers

advises homeowners to check the installation date of their boiler and seek professional advice if their system is approaching the 15-year mark. “With energy costs continuing to be a concern for many households, reviewing the efficiency of your heating system is one of the most practical steps homeowners can take to reduce their bills and improve comfort at home,” says Sean. are far more efficient than older models, meaning homeowners can reduce their energy usage while maintaining the same level of comfort in their homes.” Older systems can struggle to maintain consistent temperatures, especially during colder months and are more prone to breakdowns. Upgrading to a modern condensing boiler can provide more efficient heating and greater control over energy use. Financial supports can help offset upgrade costs too. Homeowners may qualify for a Heating Controls Upgrade Grant worth up to €700 from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. Changes to the size or layout of a home can also impact heating requirements. Many Irish

households have added extensions, attic conversions or additional living spaces in recent years, and an older boiler may struggle to heat the expanded property efficiently. Modern boilers are also designed with improved controls and smart thermostats, allowing homeowners to manage heating more efficiently and reduce unnecessary energy usage. “Home improvements such as extensions can place additional demand on your heating system,” says Sean. “If your boiler was designed for a smaller house, it may not have the capacity to heat the property properly, which can lead to higher running costs and uneven heating.” Complete Plumbing Solutions
