Public school students learn about the Blues TRIBUNE-EXPRESS NEWSROOM@EAP.ON.CA

violinist Lyndell Montgomery, were at the school teaching students for one hour a day. They made presentations on the history of blues music, its influence in various cul- tures, and how technology has affected the music. About 30 students worked in groups based on their role for a performance. Gil- lespie instructed the brass section, Stoute supervised percussion, and Montgomery oversaw a third section that enhanced the

performance with some percussion, hand clapping and even rap. Principal Mary Mc- Crimmon-Leduc said the program fits well with the school’s Character Always! initia- tive, which promotes teamwork, caring and perseverance. The idea behind the program was to integrate students from different backgrounds and teach harmony and cop- ing skills through the development of a mu- sical performance. The hope is it will lead to a more fulfilling school experience. “Music brings people together – to har- monize together – and this was an oppor- tunity to provide that to our students,” said

McCrimmon-Leduc. “It was an opportunity for them to learn music’s power.” The performance featured an original piece. The students were encouraged to find their own inner sense of rhythm and to let it guide themby working together to de- velop the final performance piece. The ex- ercise inspired cooperation and teamwork among the diverse group of students while creating something beautiful for their peers and parents to enjoy. “We challenged them to find a place somewhere in music where they could all meet and make it all become one expression,” said Gillespie.
