Back in 2022, the UK Cabinet Office announced an ambitious plan to establish 30 regional “government hubs” to replace older offices nationwide and relocate 22,000 civil service positions out of London by 2030 .
By this summer the relocation project had barely reached half of that target. Then, at the start of August, it was revealed that the plan was being scaled back. A 25 per cent reduction was made to future hubs and surplus floorspace in existing offices was let out to other departments. The Government Property Agency (GPA) overseeing the Senior Civil Service relocations reportedly acknowledged that the
offices built for the hub project were “larger than they originally needed to be”. It attributed the miscalculation to the shift to hybrid working.
