ISSUE 1
Diary of an HR Manager Monday Arrived 8.42 a.m. , a bit later than I had wanted – another cancelled train. Message from Ops manager that one of her people had broken his leg – again – playing football and would be off for three weeks at least. We have a procedure, but wasn’t this getting a bit silly? I agreed and suggested a frank conversation about career here versus career at Nowhere United Amateurs. Probably a bit flippant, but I knew she would get the message across. 10.00 a.m. The twice-postponed meeting on flexible working finally took place. Management team are still not unanimous. Sales & Marketing have been flexible since the Dawn of Time. Finance and Project Teams are against and the rest are fairly undecided . I submitted a paper proposing an analysis of those jobs that could be done remotely or hybrid, and those that had to be in the office. This was agreed without enthusiasm from some; I’d already done a rough count and knew that the majority could be done remotely or hybrid. For those that had to be office-based, I had a proposal up my sleeve to compensate for that. We broke up at 12.17 p.m. I wish I could put a ban on mobile phones in meetings! 1.22 p.m. After a sandwich lunch, a piece of good news popped into my email: the Finance director had approved my proposal to speed up the hiring process by cutting down the number of approvals required from three to one. Effective immediately, all that was needed to set recruitment in process was approval from a Finance manager that the replacement would be in the headcount budget, both salary and FTE. Any variation or new post would still need higher approval, but this was good news. I set a meeting for 2.30 p.m. with my designated system administrators to discuss and map the revised workflow for the system, and sent a screed on the new procedure to all hiring heads (line managers, mostly).
