York Creek Red Angus 14th Annual Bull Sale
Welcome to our 14th Annual Bull Sale! What a time to be in the cattle business. After years of subsequent drought and a multitude of challenges, we are reaping the rewards of perseverance. What has become increasingly apparent to us over the last 3 years is how endlessly important it is to have cattle that work for us, and not the other way around.

In the modern day and age of ever increasing input costs, perpetually shorthanded labor situations, and land prices sustaining all time values we have found that a maternal, problem free cowherd is the only way to be competitive year in and out and insulates us to these challenges. Cattle that thrive on grazing low quality invasive grass species and crop residues for a minimum of 300 plus days out of the year is not only the goal, but the expectation. Cows that do not require attention at calving for any reason, and most importantly love that calf beyond any other instinctual motivation is what we demand. Stacking pedigrees with influential sires and dams is the number one selection criteria for us because we have found often times unproven, performance based bloodlines just simply don’t have the consistency and inherent do-ability to function in grazing based programs. While I am certainly not disciplined enough to run a true linebreeding program, we are not afraid of overlapping these legacy sires and dams multiple times within 2 or 3 generations. We find this is the most consistent way to achieve cows that last. To quote Clay Conry, “Fertility drives the bus”, and the statistics behind the national cowherd average life span is alarming. These cows that have the gas to raise eventual 1600-1700 lb. fat steers are often long gone by age 6. In many instances, less than 40% of the replacement heifers retained will reach their prime as a brood cow. To add fuel to this fire, Oklahoma State studies show that the national weaning weight average hasn’t increased since the early 2000s. Indicating to us, these high powered EPDs don’t work consistently enough in restricted production environments to justify the decrease in fertility and functionality. We feel cow longevity is the most important metric by which to measure the genetics we use. This isn’t just encompassing the fleshing ability to get bred in a 45 day breeding season; but the udder suspension and teat size to get the job done, feet that keep those animals sound and grazing for a living and wean an economically viable calf in a production budget that will be in excess of $1,000 to run a cow annually. More maternal with more muscle is what our cattle will bring to the table. Cows that will add or maintain weaning weights, keep mature size in check, while increasing fleshing ability. Bulls that will inject shape and dimension, increase breed character and masculinity, while improving feet and udder quality. You will notice that nearly all of our bulls on offer possess breed leading maintenance energy and maternal trait predictors. Aside from infertility, all other guarantees will be made through insurance only. For customers who choose to insure their bulls on sale day, York Creek Red Angus will pay 50% of the policy premium for Options 1-3, or up to 6.25% for Option 4 listed on the following insurance page. Insurance representatives will be present at the sale to insure purchases in person and over the phone. There is free delivery within 300 miles, and free boarding until April 1. We will still be offering a $100 cash discount to anyone wanting to take his or her bull home directly after the sale. Once again, thank you very much for your interest in the program, and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to give us a call or swing by anytime to take a look at the bulls or cowherd. Videos will be posted to DVAuction and Livestock Digital. If you can't be at the sale in person, online bidding is available through DVAuction and CattleUSA.
