heart. It is a great thing to have a fountain that one can take with him everywhere he goes. The best of earthly springs are located and one must go to them, but this heavenly spring is within us and goes wherever we go. It leaps up with greatest power in times when all earthly sources of joy fail. When one is robbed of all that one has cherished most, and bereft of those who are dearest, this fountain then springs up with unusual abundance, and the sad dest moments become the most exult- ingly blessed. The one who has this fountain within is independent of his environment; it matters not whether things go right or wrong, whether one possesses the things he has desired or is dispossessed of them, still the foun tain within leaps up and fully satisfies. The one who has this fountain of life and joy within is independent of the
world’s sources of joy, he does not need to run after questionable pleas ures : he has no desire to, he has some thing infinitely better. The one who has drank of the crystal spring of wa ter has no' desire to drink of the slime covered pool ; the one who has really drank of the water that the Lord Jesus gives has no desire to drink of the slimy pool of this world’s pleas ures and possessions. Why is it then that so many professed Christians are running after the questionable pleas ures of the world ? The answer is very plain, either they -never have drank of the water that the Lord Jesus gives and received the Holy Spirit "to be come within them a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life (which is alas! true of many professed Christians) or else they have allowed the fountain to become choked by some sin or worldly compromise.
