CITY COMPTROLLER: NEXT ROUND OF TAX BILLS MAY HAVE POOP ON THEM City Hall has issued an non-routine public notice, warning residents about potential contamination of property tax docu- ments following the recent invasion of circus performers and animals displaced by the Great Calamity Circus re. O cials report that monkeys have overrun the ling rooms, leaving documents smeared with glitter, banana peels, and, in all cases, feces. Clowns have also tampered with notices, scrib- bling balloon animals and “clown math” adjustments onto o cial tax rates. But o cials say the fecal matter is the worst. “It’s an unprecedented situation,” said interim City Clerk Linda Marlow, who is coordinating operations from a tem- porary o ce in the public library basement. “We’re issuing replacements as fast as we can, but the monkeys are territorial, and the clowns have covered everything in whipped cream.” Residents are urged to inspect their tax forms carefully and bring any soiled documents to the temporary o ce for new copies that may or may also be covered in urine and poo. NEWSPAPER CEDES TO MADNESS, OFFICE FINALLY OVERRUN
What began as a peculiar aermath to the Great Calamity Circus Fire has escalated into full-scale pandemonium, as demented circus performers and frothing, mad animals have taken over the o ces of Dispatches from the Highlands , leaving the once-respected CannaTown newspaper in ruin. e invasion marks the latest chapter in a week of chaos that has gripped the town since the circus’s ery destruction sent clowns, monkeys, and lions pouring into the streets. Dispatches sta rst documented disturb- ing occurrences just days prior. Sly primates were spotted pinching satchels and smaking in the parking lot, and mysterious juggling pins appeared in the newsroom. By Wednes- day, clowns, hungry petting zoo animals and other stoned circusfolk began banging dra- matically on the windows when they saw the donut spread of a late-morning meeting. It wasn't long before clowns were able to pierce the building via unsecured sewer drain, and stormed the building from the furnace room and into vents. A sinister pipe organ appeared from nowhere to blast menacingly weird carnival polka as those outside tossed confetti bombs. Finally, the doors swung open and in stampeded the unrestrained beasts, their eyes bloodshot with rage and booze and brownies. Elephants trampled desks, monkeys raided the archives, and the lions roared atop lead editor’s Veronica Mills' desk before eviscerating a water cooler. Sta at Dispatches were divided into two groups. e editors, gathered in the confer- ence room with the mountain of donuts, quickly shut doors, as the remaining o ce workers and reporters retreated to the upper oor with staplers and typewriters as their only weapons. ere, they mounted a defense to keep the attackers at bay, but they were no match. "It took them no time to ll their water balloons with ink," said journalist Rebecca Rwuja. "And the acrobats climbed the elevator sha in two seconds."
From a window and nearby grove of ever- greens, those trapped on the second oor were able to escape and ee the scene. As with many other stores and schools overrun by the circus, local authorities were unable to assist and the property was avoided by the public for several days. By the weekend, the newsroom was unrecognizable. e printing presses churned out bizarre, nonsensical tab- loids about cannonballs and ponies, next to evidence of debauchery and every depraved zoological act, among piles of vomit, feces, and cocktail shrimp shells. Grease res still burned in metal wastebaskets. e smell of charred esh hung in the air. While some of the sta have gone on to continue printing the news from basement o ces ("Lions Eat Journalists," "How Bad (Really) is Eating Toxic Waste?" among recent headlines), the fate of the Dispatches editors remains uncertain. Although no evidence exists of their escape, they le this nal memo on that day: "We cannot protect the donuts much longer. ey’ve taken the layout room and executive lavatories. e co ee machine, the printer, and the breakroom Wii were all trampled by elephants. And the monkey poo is all over the walls. We are eating the donuts but we cannot eat them fast enough. Ink spills like rivers, covering the oor. e headlines are no longer ours—they will be garish and wild. We hear the growl of unicycle-balancing bears and the endless squeak of balloons. e newsroom is lost. A python ate Mrs. Lewis. "Clowns have overtaken the other bath- rooms and that is a huge problem. e last of us to hold the door was overwhelmed by a barrage of pies. Only the paper cutter and an old typewriter remain, battered and broken. We are weary. "Horns. Brass, honking horns in the deep. is is the end. We have shut ourselves in the copy room. Our pens are dry. We are alone. ey are chuckling. ay are chuckling.”

In the wake of the chaos brought on by the Great Circus Calamity, residents are embracing a fresh start with the second- annual "Great Hole Hunt" at the city's CannaTown Hole. Organized by the Parks and Recreation Department, the contest invites residents to dig holes in the huge, expansive, designated town pit, in search of the legendary "Hidden Hole." Participants compete for prizes, including fresh churros and a golden shovel trophy, while adding an air of mystery and sportsmanship to the eort. Altercation Between Puppet Gangs Causes School To Shut Down
A dark cloud hung over Cannatown School for Puppeteering this week, as the doors shut- tered by authorities, have kept both pupils and the larger public at bay since last week’s annual Winter Showcase turned violent. Investigators are still trying to get to the bot- tom of a feud between two warring factions of puppets that came to a dramatic climax at the otherwise typically-serene performance. Reports from some pupils say tensions have been growing among the factions for weeks- -even within the factions themselves. Others say the school fostered an
despite protests of teachers and audience members screaming in terror. In dramatic fashion, the two gang leaders met in a penultimate duel at the height of the uprising between the groups, sparring in front of the crowd, with mics blazing such that their soliloquies echoed throughout the performance hall. All eyes were glued on the two, as they grotesquely fought to the death -- Meatclaw, attempting to devour the Granny, who did her best to beat him sense- less with baking utensils.

A string of roller-pin assaults, kidnappings and other strange events had led some school o cials to consider canceling the Showcase altogether. ere are two major gangs of puppets within the school, notably the Woodland Creatures, led by an old wolf-like puppet named Meatclaw,
and a group of farmers and laborers organized by “Granny,” reformed witch, and aged matriarch of the village, who had campaigned for their allegiance in scouring the Woodland realm. eir homes burned and some members torn graphically apart, Woodland survivors, led by Meatclaw, vowed to destroy the village once and for all. Despite the well-orchestrat- ed and rehearsed showcase of puppetry, Fri- day’s performance quickly veered o-script in the second act as a backstage st- ght poured out from behind the curtain. Puppets began clobbering each other and cursing, all of them gripped by madness,

In the end, both adversaries had per- ished before o cials arrived. Granny had been nearly devoured whole, leaving only remnants of ragged wool garments. e wolf, likewise eventually died from internal bleed- ing, sobbing quietly to himself in his nal moments, in what was described as “some of the most haunting melodrama in the history of puppetry.” Even more chilling, was that the two foes were related, each donning an opposite hand of the same puppeteer. O cials are unsure if the school will reopen.

You’ll long to smell her sweetness once more and run your ngers upon her auburn hair, yet know, deep down that it was all a fool’s dream.

Recipes from Cousin D
CANNVERSATION HEARTS Not even the most crackerjack confectioners make their own conversation hearts -- until now! A handful of these fond and festive candies will deliver the stone that makes the world go ‘round. ey’re super simple -- albeit a little messy -- but the ultimate labor of love. Ingredients: 4 bags (2lbs ea) powdered sugar 1 cup warm water 3 tsp Agar Powder or un avored gelatin Candy avoring Fondant heart-shaped cutters Food color (gel kind) 1/2 cup infused corn syrup (I used 2 grams of activated Nomad Extracts Ice Cream Cake Shatter) Directions Warm the cup of water for up to a minute, depending on how good your microwave is. Dissolve the agar or gelatin and set aside to rest for a few minutes. In a large bowl (or stand mixer if you’re blessed to own one) pour 3 bags of powdered sugar. Make a well in the center, then add the warm water and infused corn syrup. With mixer, start on low speed and incorpo- rate well. e mixture will be very runny at rst, but turn into a sti dough. You will probably have to nish by hand and knead it on the counter by the end (make sure to dust surfaces with that additional bag of powdered sugar rst). Divide the nished sugar-dough into how- ever many sections you choose for color- avor combinations. Wrap each chunk tightly in plastic or keep in sandwich bags to keep moist until used. Don't be afraid to wet hands and work a little water back in if needed. As you work with each chunk of dough, make a small well in the middle, adding avor and color to your liking. Knead on the
counter until the color is fully incorporated and roll at to about 1/4 inch thick. I found it easiest to have a drying tray behind the slab of dough, working your way forward. Stamp with heart cutter, trimming away extra scraps at the same time, then push to release each heart onto the tray. Re-roll scraps to use as much as you can, repeating with all colors. Dry for at least 24 hours. Package cute and give to loved ones and friends. Mine ended up about 1mg each and super avorful--much better than store bought candies by far and easy to eat a ton!

If you’re cruisin’ through Colorado Springs with a mean case of the munchies, you’ve got some cosmic donut options to consider. Amy’s Donuts and Hurts Donut are both Springs staples, slingin’ fried circles of joy, but they each bring their own vibes to the table. In other words, they’re the Yin and Yang of donut shops—both killer, but totally dierent trips. Amy’s Donuts is about the homemade, handcraed scene. Every donut here is made fresh daily, from scratch, like your grand- ma’s cookies but a little more psychedelic. eir lineup is packed with donuts topped with candies, cereals, and gooey drizzles that look like edible art. ey’re open for curbside pick-up, drive-thru (on Fountain), and even DoorDash delivery if you’re too baked to leave the couch. Amy’s is like that chill friend who bakes for you and keeps it mellow but is also totally sweet (hint hint). Hurts Donut Co. is a whole other vibe. ey’re like the rebels of the donut universe. ese are the rockstars of the donut conven- tion. ey slap on some outrageous top- pings, from candy bars to full-on breakfast cereals. And remember folks—they’re open 24/7 (which is ideal, because some of us only get struck with this ridiculous kind of munchie at 3am in the morning). Plus, they’ve got this rad thing called the Emer- gency Donut Vehicle. It’s like a donut ambu- lance except that they gotta, like, drive the speed limit. (Still it’s a total game changer
and will totally embarrass your spouse). When it comes to style, Amy’s is like a groovy artisan donut gallery, and Hurts is a donut circus on steroids. Amy’s feels more laid-back, like they’re making each donut with love. Hurts is all about the “go big or go home” mentality, slingin’ donuts that are bigger, crazier, and, perfect for sharing—if you can ever imagine a person sharing a donut. Try Moose Munch and Dirt Worms for a chocolate cake x. Or choose S’Mores, complete with toasted marshmallow. Price-wise, both places are pretty reason- able, and Hurts’ massive portions might stretch your dollar a little further if you’re really packin’ an appetite. But Amy’s keeps it classy with their attention to detail, almost ideal for the o ce breakroom or gi exchange. Do you want a donut you can admire? Or one that looks like it just partied hard at Willy Wonka’s back patio (“ e Cot- ton Candy -- has cotton candy in it!”)? at said, Hurts might be better suited for the dis- pensary breakroom. Or, in impressing your father-in-law-to-be during his hangover. In the end, you can’t go wrong with either spot. Amy’s is still a pretty chill go-to staple for quality and crasmanship, while Hurts is the wild card when you wanna let loose and relieve some munchies-fueled starva- tion. Try ’em both! Because life’s too short to keep buyin’ uninspired, clam shells full of grocery store pastry balls that don't do justice to the adventure of breakfast.
