Literacy’s Impact on Healthy Lifestyles

Build family literacy skills and encourage healthy habits with a brand-new title list just for WIC Centers and Providers.

Like you, we know that higher literacy rates are associated with better health outcomes. So we built a title list to help families achieve both.

These titles on Healthy Food , Healthy Habits , Healthy Moves , and Favorite Stories encourage a personal connection to reading while promoting health and wellness.

Benefits to Families

Encourages Healthy Habits Children who are exposed to a variety of fruits and vegetables are more likely to choose to try those foods, which can lead to lifelong healthier habits. Books can introduce children to a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, piquing their interest and building their vocabularies.

Strengthens the Mother-Child Bond

Fosters School-Ready Children Early literacy experiences can establish a strong foundation in a child’s brain architecture. The development of children’s brains during their first years provides the basis for all future learning, behavior, and health.

As a child’s first teacher and role model, mothers play an important role in their children’s literacy development. Reading aloud creates a special bond that fosters a love of reading and sets the stage for optimal social, emotional, and cognitive development.
