Project -You Make Cave Art!

Sometimes cave art is carved into a rock or wall, but in the caves of France, the art is drawn onto the wall. The artists did not change the surface of the rock, but looked at the bumpy surface to see what sort of animal it suggested. The shapes of some of the animals follow the natural shape of the rock so the body might follow a bump or a crack. You can make a cave picture, using the wrinkles on a piece of paper as your cave wall. 1. Wrinkle a piece of brown paper by crunching it into a loose ball. Carefully flatten it out. Now you have a rough surface similar to what the cave painters drew on. 2. Look for shapes or lines that suggest an animal or part of an animal. The painters of the caves drew animals they saw. Draw an animal you know about using rust, black, brown, yellow, and white soft pastels. 3. When finished, have an adult spray the drawing lightly with hair spray to keep the drawing from smearing. 4. Glue the drawing onto black construction paper. A pattern can be drawn onto the black border with pastel and sprayed again with hair spray.
