Artists Compose
Lesson 1
Artists place things together to create something new. They compose. Musicians place notes together to make songs that we hear. Choreographers put body movements together to make dances that we feel. In theatre, story and song are put together to make plays that we act out. Visual artists place images together to make pictures that we see.
Music, dance, theatre, and visual arts are all part of what we call
the ARTS. This book is about visual artists. They work with the way things look. They put things together in new ways so others can see a part of the world the way the artist sees or imagines it. Artists move objects and colors around, composing their pictures, so that we can see the subjects in new ways.
I’ve Done That! Exercise
This lesson teaches us that artists compose things we hear, feel, act, and see. This book is about artists who put together things that we see.
Talk about the things you have done in the arts. They may be things like playing a musical instrument, singing, dancing, participating in a play, drawing a picture, or modeling sand or play dough. Note: Create awareness of the arts by discussing areas in which the student has already participated. Participation does not mean to have performed the piece in front of others. Simply doing any of these things helps in understanding the arts and feeling comfortable with having already done it.
