Materials: gouache paint, watercolor paper, palette, water containers, round brush, paper towel, and colored poster board.
You can paint an outdoor object at different seasons or in different kinds of weather just like Monet did. Choose a simple object to look at while you paint. Try to paint it as it looks, using the method shown on this page. You can paint an object in different seasons and then hang them together. Paint by looking at a real tree or a photograph of a tree.

Colleen (age 9) painted a series of trees in summer, fall, and winter.

Because gouache is opaque, a light color can cover a dark color. To do this, paint dark colors first. 1. Here, the colors of the tree are painted. 2. A sky- blue mixture (blue and white) is dabbed into the tree and onto the branches to show the sky behind the tree. 3. For a winter tree, the brown and gray branches are painted solid (shown on the left side of the tree). Then the blue color of a sky is dabbed through the branches. Finished branches are shown on the right side of the tree. 4. This seasonal series is finished as the new spring growth is shown using a mixture of yellow and green. Use the same technique as shown in examples 1 and 2.
