The return to hospitality wasn’t necessarily part of Alice van der Woude’s original plan. Like many in the industry, it began with casual work while studying at university, before her career took her in a very different direction. After completing a business and law degree and working in advertising, Alice eventually found herself drawn back home to Tasmania – and back into the world of tourism and hospitality. Today, as Director of Marketing and Experience at On Board Expeditions and Above and Beyond Tasmanian Sea Planes, she helps deliver high-end tourism experiences in Tasmania’s remote south-west wilderness, blending accommodation, guiding and hospitality into one unique offering. Along the way, she also rediscovered something else: a passion for an industry built around creating memorable experiences for people.
Alice is one of several women to benefit from Hospitality Tasmania’s Women in Leadership scholarship program — an initiative designed to support and empower women across the state’s hospitality and tourism sectors.
“I really enjoy my role at the moment,” Alice said.
“You really can make a positive impact on people’s lives, and you’re giving joy by giving them this tourism and hospitality experience. I find that really rewarding.”
