5. CLIMB ST ANDREW’S CHURCH TOWER At 114.5 metres, the tower of St Andrew’s Church is the highest in Lower Saxony. To get to the viewing platform at a height of 75 metres, you have to put in quite an effort: There are 364 steps between the ground and the magnif - icent view over the city. Once you reach the top, you will see the climb is more than worth it!
YOUR TOP EXPERIENCES IN HILDESHEIM

1. STROLL ACROSS THE HISTORIC MARKET SQUARE
3. VISIT ST MICHAEL’S CHURCH AND THE MAGDALENA GARDENS
Pflasterzauber, Eric Tarantola
Where, magnificent half-timbered houses stand side by side. Each building, or facade, was faithfully reconstructed in the 1980s after being almost completely destroyed in the Second World War. Listen to the carillon of the Hildesheim Town Hall and le t your eyes wander from the carvings and pictures on the Knochenhauer-Amtshaus (Butchers’ Guild Hall) and the Wedekindhaus to the elaborate architecture of the Tempelhaus and the beautiful facades and sections of the Van der Valk Hotel. An absolute highlight in winter during the Christmas market!
It is not without good reason that the church, over a thousand years old, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site along - side St Mary’s Cathedral. It stands as one of the most signif - icant surviving examples of Ottonian architecture. Perched like a fortress atop St Michael’s Hill, the church’s interior exudes a unique and inspiring atmosphere, not least be - cause of its monumental 13th-century ceiling fresco. A mere stone’s throw away lies the beautiful Magdalenengarten (Magdalena Gardens), a haven for hundreds of roses, wild tulips, and precious varieties of fruit trees.
7. EXPERIENCE DIVERSE CULTURE Hildesheim loves culture! Whether you visit the Theat - er für Niedersachsen (Theatre for Lower Saxony – TfN), listen to finest jazz and blues in the Bischofsmühle and at Jazztime, take part at a Comedy or Poetry Slam at the KUFA, visit the EVI LICHTUNGEN, Marketplace Music Festival,Woodlands, M'era Luna, Pflasterzauber or the Hildesheim Christmas market – the city offers extraordi - nary events all year round. 8. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE SCENERY Hildesheim provides the perfect setting for combining an exciting city experience with a relaxing swim in the coun - tryside. The River Innerste, almost 100 kilometres long, flows through the city and is ideal for canoeing or stan - dup paddleboarding. The Hohnsensee lake is also close to the city centre and is ideal for swimming, jogging or just relaxing. To further immerse yourself in the scenery, take a walk through the neighbouring Ernst-Ehrlicher-Park and the ramparts or along the Kalenberger Graben. You can also explore the surrounding area by bike or on foot.

6. STROLL THROUGH THE ENCHANTING OLD TOWN
Walking through the historic half-timbered Old Town feels like being in a fairy tale, with the last remaining watch - tower in the city, the Kehrwiederturm, and the colourful, sometimes whimsical, half-timbered houses adorned with fragrant climbing roses. The charm of the half-timbered buildings is especially magical on Kesslerstraße, which forms part of the Rose Route. But there are also real eye-catchers in the surrounding streets, such as the richly decorated Wernersche Haus, one of the oldest preserved half-timbered houses in Hildesheim.

4. TAKE PART IN A CITY TOUR There are many different ways to explore Hildesheim. Why not join a guided tour of the city? Experienced Hildesheim ex - perts will show you the highlights of the city and give you real insider information. If you prefer to explore the city on your own, take the Rose Route and let the more than 150 ceramic roses embedded in the ground show you the way. You can also pick up a brochure from the Tourist Information Office on the Market Square as your companion or download the new Hildesheim city tour in the Lauschtour app. The hiApp also has selected city tours ready for you.

2. ADMIRE THE CATHEDRAL TREASURY When visiting a cathedral city, exploring the cathedral itself is an essential part of the experience. Our St Mary’s Cathe - dral, one of the oldest episcopal churches in Germany, is list - ed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside St Michael’s Church. In addition to the legendary Thousand-year Rose, the Cathedral Museum is home to the Cathedral Treasury, one of the world’s most important collections of sacred art and also part of the Word Heritage Site.

its Lower Saxon alternating columns and fully formed cube capitals is one of the most important surviving churches in the Ottonian (pre-Romanesque) architectural style. Don't forget to look up when you're in the church – the ceiling of the central nave is adorned by a monumental panel painting from the High Middle Ages, created around 1200. The Tree of Jesse is depicted on 1,300 painted oak planks.
St Mary’s Cathedral
ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL The cathedral is impressive for its sheer size, and for its unique art treasures. Take the gilded Hezilo chandelier from the Middle Ages, which is six metres in diameter! Or the Bernward Doors, a masterpiece of bronze casting. The Thousand-year Rose is a popular photo opportunity in the courtyard framed by the cloister. In the Cathedral Museum, you can learn about the legend that literally surrounds this place, dating back to the founding of the diocese in 815. Among other things, the Cathedral Treas - ury, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, can be seen here, with one of the world's most impressive collections of sacred art.
UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE
St Michael’s Church
Currently, there are 1,248 UNESCO World Heritage Sites worldwide across 170 countries, with 55 located in Germany alone. But what exactly is UNESCO’s mission? UNESCO is dedicated to preserving and protecting the world’s rich cultural and natural heritage. It also plays a vital role in fostering global cooperation, promoting peace and ensuring security. UNESCO World Heritage Sites serve as powerful symbols of this mission, connecting people by showcasing diversity, global solidarity and our shared responsibility. These extraordinary places tell the story of humanity’s lives and labours, offering fascinating insights into the development of our planet. One heritage – two churches: In 1985 St Mary’s Cathedral and St Michael’s Church at Hildesheim were jointly added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Together with their artistic treasures, these two churches are remarkable ex - amples of religious art in the Holy Roman Empire and out - standing achievements of early Romanesque architecture.

HILDESHEIM CATHEDRAL MUSEUM
With its origins dating back to the 9th century, Hildesheim Cathedral is one of the oldest cathedrals in Germany. In 1985, it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status for its unique medieval artworks of incomparable quality. The cloister leads past the legendary Thousand-year-Rose to the cathedral museum. Modern architecture, contem - porary art and outstanding medieval treasures interact in exciting ways, making a visit to the museum an impressive experience. The cathedral museum has preserved numerous objects that contain works of art, materials, motifs and techniques from distant regions. Europe looked with particular admira - tion to the Islamic-influenced regions of the southern and eastern Mediterranean. A multilingual tour invites visitors to discover the cultural interconnections through historical objects. Special exhibitions regularly provide variety and repeatedly focus on new themes and works of art. From 29 October 2025 to 6 April 2026, renowned artists Alice Creischer and Andreas Siekmann will be staging the exhibition ‘The Circu - lation of Labour, Capital and Life as a Supply Chain’. Based on the 16th-century Wrisberg epitaph in the Cathedral Mu - seum, the artists will address aspects of historical and con - temporary economics, mining, colonialism and mission in a three-room installation. "On Foot. Objects on Legs" will be the theme in autumn 2026. As the title suggests, the exhibition will focus on a previously little-noticed aspect of the artworks, which nev - ertheless plays a key role in a variety of artistic ways. Paws, claws, animals and mythical creatures will feature in a di - verse parade of historical works from the collection, which will also include loans from other major museums.
EXPERIENCE CULTURE LIVE When stories are brought to life, the magic of the stage is inescapable. Whether it’s timeless works, imaginative char - acters or topical themes – art entertains, moves and brings people together. The Theater fü r Niedersachsen (Theatre for Lower Saxony – TfN) presents a wide range of cultural events at the Hildesheim City Theatre and other venues: classical operas, humorous operettas, plays from traditional to modern, mu - sicals from Broadway to chanson, social events and concerts with orchestras and choirs. There is also plenty on offer for children and young people. As a state theatre, the TfN also offers performances in around 40 towns and communities in Lower Saxony and the neighbouring federal states. The Musical Company, which was established in 2007 and makes the musical genre a separate section of the TfN, is unique in Germany. The complete programme can be found on the TfN website at www.mein-theater.live. Tickets are available online, by phone at 05121 16931693 and at the service centre in Theaterstraße 6.

OUT OF THE RUT, INTO THE BISCHOFSMÜHLE! Bischofsmü hle Cyclus 66 e.V. is a non-profit cultural asso - ciation recognised as worthy of support and based in the Bischofsmü hle Hildesheim. The building is located on the Innerste in the heart of the city and offers a unique atmos - phere in the basement of a former water mill. This is why the “Mü hle” is often referred to as “the chicest club be - tween Moscow and New York”. In addition to the yearround cultural activities at the Bischofsmü hle, the association has been organising Jazztime Hildesheim since 1979. Over the years, the three-day jazz festival, which always takes place at Whitsun, has become as much a cultural trademark of the city of Hildesheim as the Bischofsmü hle itself.
CREATIVE · TOGETHER · CELEBRATE Woodlands e.V. stands for shared experiences, creative exchange and open encounters. Founded in 2019 by several collectives, Woodlands has developed into one of the city's most exciting projects. At its heart is the Woodlands site: a colourful place full of life is being created on 5,100 m², where concerts, parties and open-air cinema have just as much space as flea markets, workshops and family cele - brations. The aim is to create spaces where community, participation, creativity and inclusion can be experienced. Woodlands wants to enable unforgettable moments for Hildesheim and the region.

the roundabout – an idyllic stop for a delicious cappuccino. The quacking of ducks, cobblestones and the ringing of bells combine to create a melody unique to Hildesheim. I could linger here a little longer. Just a few minutes' walk away is Lake Hohnsen : a spacious bathing lake with freely accessible sunbathing lawns and the JoWiese, an outdoor pool with a sandy beach by the lake. It is a popular leisure destination for walkers and cyclists, sports enthusiasts, families and model boat builders. But I set off for the next, slightly smaller body of water. My path takes me under majestic trees along the Langelin- ien Wall . Again and again, wonderful views open up onto the Kalenberger Graben , once a city moat, now a natural lifeline for numerous plants and animals. Further along, the path leads directly down to the water. I sit down on a bench and count the ducks frolicking under the overhang - ing willows. The ringing of church bells accompanies me as I gaze into the distance. But before I finish, I want to take a look at a hidden gem! To do so, I cross the stone Johannis Bridge and walk towards the Innerste river, past the Bis - chofsmühle, over the next bridge, up the hill and along the green-covered wall. On my right, a richly decorated wrought-iron gate opens up a fantastic view of the Magdalena Gardens , one of the oldest parks in northern Germany, with its countless roses and St. Michael's Church in the background. A beautiful sight and a successful end to my tour. Satisfied, I stop at the Inselcafé, surrounded by water, and reflect on my impressions. My conclusion: Hildesheim's green spaces are not just an accessory. They are what make this city lively and liveable. And once you have discovered them with your eyes open, you will never want to miss them again!

A nearby meadow offers me a magnificent view of St. Godehard's Basilica, while the last remaining city tower exudes its historical charm. It's worth having a camera with you here! The tour starts at 5 pm every Friday and Saturday on the Advent weekends and includes a warming Glühwein (mulled wine) or punch per person. The route takes you along the beautifully lit streets around the historic Market Square, accompanied by the delicious fragrances of various Lebkuchen, roasted almonds and Schmalzkuchen (bite-sizeddoughnuts).
POST OFFICE ‘ZUM RENTIER’ When the hustle and bustle of the Christmas market begins, the post office ‘Zum Rentier’ also opens its doors. Children can write their letters and wishes here and post them in the wish box. From there, they are sent to the fa - mous Christmas post office in Himmelsthür, which receives mail from all over the world every year. Every letter with a return address is answered.
