TOURS WITH THE SPREEWALD BARGE How about a leisurely trip on a Spreewald barge? BootsClub Gronau offers an adventure tour on the Leine, starting at the Gronau boathouse and taking you along the town to Banteln. During the 1.5-hour trip, the boatman will tell you interesting facts about the area, the Gronau historical riverside and the Banteln watermill. Each barge holds 8 people. An ideal place to start is in Hildesheim on the Innerste (Mühlengraben) near the motorhome park at the Hohnsensee (Lake Hohnsen). The River Leine is equally well-suited for paddling, and in the summer months, the Giftener See (Lake Giften) comes alive with a vibrant mix of sailing boats and stand-up paddlers. HOHNSENSEA Hildesheim’s largest lake, covering approximately 9.5 hectares, is located close to the town centre. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the lake, cool off at the Jo- Wiese open-air pool with its 150-metre-long sandy beach, the JoBeach, or swim for free in the rest of the lake. Top off the evening with a sundowner on the terrace of the Wienerwald Restaurant. Hohnsen, 31134 Hildesheim TONKUHLE The Tonkuhle lake is located on the Galgenberg hill near the university. True to its name, which translates as ‘clay pit’, the Tonkuhle was created in the 1960s by clay mining. It is fed by groundwater and is up to 9 metres deep.
