INTERVIEW WITH SOLOMON JOHN: Embracing Musical Evolution and Finding "Home"
W e had the pleasure of speaking with John Solomon, an accomplished DJ and singer, about his latest track "Home" and his musical journey. Here's what he had to say: Congratulations on the release of your latest track, "Home"! Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the song and what it means to you personally? Hi! Thank you so much! "Home" was the track I've always wanted to make. It combines a soulful melody with a classic drop that hooks you in and demands repeated listening. The lyrics actually came to me during the lockdown when I had Covid and was uncertain about my health. Being alone in Jozi at the time made me reflect on the true meaning of home and how everything looks different when you're unsure if you'll wake up tomorrow. You recently completed your professional DJ course at the DJ and Music Production Institute. How has this training influenced your approach to music production, and how did it contribute to the creation of your DJ/Artist brand?
Yes! It was a tremendous learning experience for me. As a songwriter, my focus had always been on conveying feelings rather than seamlessly blending music or considering its context. The course allowed me to take a step back and view music production as the art of stitching together a musical tapestry. To use an analogy, it shifted my perspective from looking at a single word on a page to envisioning what the entire page could look like. In radio, time constraints dictate shorter tracks, but as a DJ, I have the space to take smaller, more meaningful steps that create tension and mood. This motivation has pushed me to explore my creative side further, unrestricted by time limitations. "Home" has been described as an ultra-smooth indie track. How would you define your musical style, and how do you feel this track represents your artistic evolution? I don't think I have a specific style that I confine myself to.
