like as we are, the Lord's humanity had to reach the lowest point of weakness. This is how the devil tempts us, trying at our most vul­ nerable points. No one, however, has ever been tempted under con­ ditions more severe than those en­ countered by our Lord. This made His victory more complete. The first point of the temptation was that of the body. The other two were in the realm of soul and spirit. It has always been Satan's attempt, starting in the Garden of Eden, to reach man through the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. The body level is the lowest common denominator. Always there is that effort to cast doubt on the power and pur­ pose of God. In every case, our Lord turned back His accuser by Page 35

children two years of age and un­ der. The earth has probably never seen such a cruel, diabolical mas­ sacre. In Matthew 4:1-11 and Luke 4:1- 13 we can study the temptation of ' our Lord by the devil in the wilder­ ness. It was just after Jesus' bap­ tism in the Jordan that He was impelled by the Holy Spirit to go into the wilderness rather than to return home to Galilee. The first act of Christ's ministry was an en­ counter with the adversary of our souls. By this testing, the Lord proved Himself to be the obedient Servant of God. During this period He went without food for 40 days and 40 nights. He was so completely satis­ fied with the fulness of the Holy Spirit that He was oblivious to physical hunger. To be tempted
