In February 2022, the electrical industry lost a strong advocate, great ambassador, and friend in Derek Thompson. A former ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year, JIB electrician, Managing Director, ECA Branch Chairman and CEO of ETT/SparkSafe, Derek was focused on increasing the professionalism and competitiveness of the electrical industry. Derek’s legacy will be celebrated by the Derek Thompson Industry Service Award during the Above & Beyond Awards (ABA). The category is presented to an organisation or individual who has contributed to enhancing electrical safety for a sustained period of typically five years. The ABA, created by the Electrical Safety Roundtable in the Workplace group, have been designed to recognise and celebrate individuals and organisations who go above and beyond to enhance and improve electrical safety within the workplace. The awards are now open for entries. The deadline is January 13, 2023, and winners will be announced in February. Three Powerpoint Engineering employees, Conor McGarry, Johan Erasmus, and David Phelan, have raised an incredible €20,000 in aid of Midlands Down Syndrome Centre following a three-day, 575 km cycle from Malin Head in Donegal to Slea Head in the Dingle Peninsula earlier this year. Sean Conlon, who has been working part- time with the trio for the past six years, was the main inspiration behind the fundraising cycle. Sean is a service user at the Down Syndrome Centre Midlands, which is based

in Portlaoise and serves the Laois, Offaly, and Kildare communities. The centre provides essential services, information and support to families and carers of people with Down Syndrome, helping them reach their full potential and create a brighter future. “Down Syndrome Centre is Ireland’s first services-led centre for children with Down Syndrome aged 18 and under and their families,” Johan Erasmus commented. “We were blown away by the donations and messages of support.”
