Normally, the contactor is used in applications with higher current carrying capacity, whereas the relay is used for lower current applications.
A thermal overload relay is designed to protect electrical systems from overheated conditions. It does not shut off power to the circuit but instead senses when the current has reached a high enough level and opens, allowing the motor to continue to run.
