Preston College Celebrates 50 Years of Educational Excellence
Preston College is proud to be celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking half a century of delivering high-quality education and training to the local community and beyond. Originally opened as W.R. Tuson College in 1974 and renamed as Preston College in 1989, the College has become well known for its academic and vocational success, developing skills and nurturing the talents of thousands of students - contributing to the growth and success of the region Over the past 50 years, Preston College has continued to grow as a vibrant educational institution, offering a diverse range of educational pathways that cater to the needs of today’s students. From academic qualifications to vocational training, apprenticeships and the newly introduced T Levels, the College has continuously evolved, ensuring that our students are prepared with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen industry. Simon Nixon, Principal and Chief Executive, expressed his pride in the College’s achievements. “Celebrating 50 years is a monumental milestone for the College. We have a rich history of transforming lives through education and supporting individuals to reach their full potential. Our success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, the support of our community, and, most importantly, the achievements of our students. As we look to the future, and the next 50 years, we remain committed to providing an inclusive, innovative, and inspiring educational environment that meets the ever-changing needs of our students and the wider community.” Preston College has been the starting point for many successful careers, producing a distinguished list of alumni who have made significant contributions in various fields. Among them are Jordan North, the popular Capital Radio DJ and television presenter; Nick Park, the Oscar-winning creator of Wallace and Gromit; and Sir Lenny Henry, one of Britain’s most beloved comedians and actors. These accomplished individuals have excelled in their careers, and we like to think that their time in College contributed in some way to their future success.
Reflecting on his time at Preston College, Jordan North said, “I studied Media Production from 2006 to 2008 and it was the best two years I had. I enjoyed college just as much as university. It was at college where I learnt so much about media and it’s where I realised I wanted to work in this great industry. “When I was at Preston College there were loads of work experience opportunities, obviously you’ve got to do it yourself, but the tutors had contacts, and I got a couple of weeks work experience at Rock FM. I also got some work experience on the Iceland adverts as a runner and that was down to one of my tutors. It was a week and I got paid - I had to go and get pizza for Kerry Katona and Jason Donovan – it was a good week and I learnt loads. “If I was to give advice to anyone who’s coming to Preston College, I’d tell them to get stuck in, keep their head down and really go for it, as cheesy at that sounds – really get stuck in, focus on what you want to do and have a plan and enjoy it as well. You’re going to meet some great people – it’s a great time in your life.” The College’s impact goes beyond our high-profile alumni. Over the decades, countless students have passed through our doors, each with their own unique story of growth and success. Sarah Churchward Reay, a former City & Guilds Hospitality student, shared her experience, “After leaving WR Tuson College in 1984, I worked in several restaurants before pursuing Cordon Bleu Cooking at the Tante Marie School in Woking. Following my studies, I had the opportunity to cook for Lady Astor of Hever on her Scottish estate, Tillyprony, in Aberdeenshire. I then joined Lindeth Fell Country House, where I advanced from chef to Head Chef, and eventually became the manager. My next step was as a Hotel Inspector for Visit Britain, followed by a role as Quality Assurance Manager for a holiday cottage company in the Lake District. Twelve years ago, I relocated to Tiverton, Devon, and opened a bakery. A dozen years later, I’m still at it—and I love every moment of it. It sure beats working for a living!” “The education I received at Preston College enabled me to see every aspect of Hotel & Tourism, finding my love for cooking, as well being involved in hospitality. It made me who I am.”

The Performing Arts course boosted my confidence and helped me believe in myself again. The support I received also helped me gain my Level 2 English and basic maths qualifications – essential for moving forward. Now I am a qualified mental health nurse for a year, I love my job and find it incredibly rewarding. I share my story to inspire others who may be in a similar situation to keep pushing forward.”
Ryan Since leaving Preston College, Ryan built a successful career in the Performing Arts before transitioning to his current role as Business Development Manager. He credits much of his success to the skills he honed at Preston College, saying, “The ability to confidently deliver training and presentations to large groups has been key.”
Andrea Andrea, a former student at the Preston Information Technology Centre in 1991, has worked at Preston College for over 30 years. She studied business admin through an early apprenticeship while working on reception. Tina is now the Student Services Manager and Designated Safeguarding Lead, playing a key role in developing the department and implementing the College’s Trauma Informed Approach.

Apprenticeships A Pathway for All Ages and Career Stages
While apprenticeships have traditionally been seen as a route for school leavers, we recognise that learning and professional development does not stop at 18. Increasingly, adults are turning to apprenticeships, whether to upskill in their current roles or embark on entirely new career paths. At Preston College, we are seeing a growing demand for apprenticeship opportunities among professionals who are eager to enhance their skills and advance in their careers. In response to this shift, we are proud to offer a diverse range of apprenticeships and higher apprenticeships (Level 4 and above) tailored not just for young people, but also for experienced professionals looking to stay ahead in their industries. This flexibility ensures that apprenticeships remain a valuable and accessible route for career progression, no matter where individuals are in their professional journey. Employers are also recognising the numerous benefits of taking on apprentices of all ages. Adult apprentices bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm, and a strong drive to learn - making them a vital asset to any organisation. By training apprentices in the specific skills and processes relevant to their business, employers can quickly and efficiently shape their workforce to meet current and future needs. For the apprentice, this investment from their employer is often seen as a vote of confidence, making them feel valued and motivated to contribute more to the organisation. They become highly skilled, loyal employees who understand their company culture and are committed to its growth. What’s more, apprentices gain hands-on
experience, practical skills, and recognised qualifications that enable them to build long-term, rewarding careers. This creates a cycle of growth for both the apprentice and the employer, contributing to the overall success of the business and the individual. Apprenticeships are more than just qualifications—they can open doors to new career opportunities, financial independence, and personal growth. At Preston College, we are proud to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of both individuals and industries, one apprentice at a time. Salim, (pictured right), is a Level 3 Light Goods Vehicle Service and Maintenance apprentice with Preston College and works at National Tyres Marsh Lane. He says, “Starting the LGV service and maintenance course at Preston College as an adult has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. It’s never too late to learn, and I’m genuinely enjoying the chance to gain new skills. Education plays such a crucial role, and I’m excited about the doors this knowledge will open for me. The practice sessions are hands-on and really effective, and the tutors at Preston College are incredibly approachable. Our tutor, in particular, is highly knowledgeable and has a talent for breaking down even the most complicated subjects in a way that’s easy to understand. I’d highly recommend Preston College to anyone looking to continue their studies.” So, whether you are seeking to specialise further in your current field, or pivot to a new career, our apprenticeships and higher apprenticeships provide a robust pathway for development and success.

£1.4 Million Digital Suites Unveiled at Preston College
Preston College proudly opened its transformative £1.4 million Digital Suite in September 2024. This advanced facility will be instrumental in developing the next generation of digital and creative experts. The renovation has turned the former media, music, and recording spaces into cutting-edge digital suites, creative design studios, and a specialised gaming room. This new environment will support our T Level courses across a range of disciplines, including media production, games design, digital production, accounting, and digital design and development. This represents a significant investment in the future of our students, and will not only support our current programmes but will also pave the way for innovative new courses and opportunities.” Construction on the remodelled building began at the start of the 2024 summer break and was completed for the start of term. FWP, a leading architecture and design firm in Preston, managed the project, and the result is a modern, accessible facility designed to develop creativity and collaboration. Mike Turner, Associate at FWP, commented, “The transformation is a pivotal development for the College and its digital and creative students. “Our brief was to deliver modern, flexible learning spaces and collaborative workstations and to provide an immersive and interactive learning experience where students are able to thrive. “The new facility will be the home for the College’s existing digital courses and, with its digital suites sitting alongside design and creative studios, it will also allow the College to further develop new exciting courses in this growing field of opportunity. “We have worked closely with the College’s digital department staff on the design and the result is
very exciting. We’re also proud to be playing our part in helping create opportunities for young people in our home city.” This is the second major refurbishment in recent years at Preston College involving FWP. In 2021, FWP also redesigned part of the College’s construction facility, adding a modern exterior and a new mezzanine level for T Level courses. The latest project was executed by Longridge-based construction firm Carefoot, which also contributed to the previous refurbishment. In January 2024, Preston College launched its first Sector Advisory Groups, aimed at providing expert guidance on industry-specific needs and developments. These groups ensure that our curriculum aligns with the skills requirements of both the local area and specific sectors, helping to shape a workforce that is prepared for the challenges of tomorrow. Currently, we have established five advisory groups focusing on Arts & Community, Construction & the Built Environment, Education & Childcare, STEM & Automotive, and Business & Professional Services, collaborating with 33 different employers. The early impact of these groups on our curriculum and student outcomes has been highly positive, and we are excited to build on this success. We want to continue to bridge the gap between industry and academia whilst fulfilling our college vision ‘To transform lives through education.’ Looking ahead, we plan to expand this initiative by launching four additional groups in the areas of Hair & Beauty, Sport, Digital, and Health by August 2025. If you are interested in joining one of these groups, or would like to contribute to one of the established groups, please contact Linzi Monks, Director of Apprenticeships and Employer Engagement, at lmonks@preston.ac.uk
