Strong Son of God Strong Son of God, immortal Love, Whom we, that have not seen Thy face. By faith, and faith alone, embrace, Believing where we cannot prove. Thine are these orbs of light and shade; Thou madest life in man and brute; Thou madest death; and lo, Thy foot Is on the skull which Thou hast made. Thou wilt not leave us in the dust: Thou madest man, he knows not why; He thinks he was not made to die; And Thou hast made him: Thou art just. Thou seemest human and divine, The highest, holiest manhood. Thou, Our wills are ours, we know not how; Our wil|s are ours, to make them Thine. Our little systems have their day; They have their day, and cease to be: They are but broken lights of Thee, And Thou, O Lord, art more than they. -Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

b. On the human side, there were two elements. (1). The passing through the place of death as seen In Israel’s crossing over the river bed of Jordan. According to Joshua 3:15, Jor dan’s banks were overflowed at that time, and to go down into that place was like going into death. Even so the Christian must die to self-interests, plans, reputation, etc. (2). And the second element in the passing was faith. It was not until the priests who carried the ark touched the Jordan with their feet that the waters were geparated and the people passed over as on dry land (Josh. 3:14-17). It was at this test of faith that Israel had failed forty years before at Kadesh- barnea (Heb. 3:19). If a believer is now undergoing the wretched wilderness experience and Sincerely desires thé victorious Canaan life, God will bring him into it as he renounces self, and wholly trusts Him. The call to the Canaan life is not a call to sinless p e r f e c t i o n . The seventh chapter of Joshua gives the sad record of arrested progress in Canaan. Even so, the believer’s prog ress in the Canaan life now may be hindered just as it was in the case of Israel; namely, by sin. But, as in the case of Israel, the progress was only temporarily hindered, so it may be with the C h r i s t i a n . “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper’’ (Prov. 28:13). The counterpart of this statement is found in Joshua 8. Here we have the record of Israel’s going against and o v e r c o m i n g the in habitants of Ai. So far as God’s provision is con cerned, we need not suffer defeat, but if we do, there can be instant forgiveness and cleansing (1 John 1:9), a complete restoration and an advance to even greater victory. God grant that this may be the portion of every reader of this article. If you have a favorite book of the Bible you would like discussed, write us about it. —T he E ditors .
