We ju st com m itted ourselves to th e Lord, who alone is able to give p ro tectio n a t such a tim e. “Mr. Squires and I to o k a w a lk around n e x t m o rn in g to see w h a t h ad been done and we found th a t n e arly ev ery place in the c ity had been looted, m o st of them ab so lu tely cleaned of ev ery th in g . T hose w ho h ad n o th in g m uch to lose b u t a P u ’k a i found them selves rid of th a t. I t is a sad sig h t indeed to see th e poor people, th e sto re s a re all closed as th ey have n o th in g to sell. Mr. Squires says it looks a s if it m ig h t be th e New Y ear as fa r as bu sin ess is con­ cerned. T hey w ere so w ell organized th a t one n ig h t w as sufficient to go th ro u g h th e w hole c ity from end to end. I believe th e re w ere ab o u t te n th o u sa n d m en in ­ volved. “One can h a rd ly expect oth erw ise when th ey le a rn th a t th e m en have no t received an y m oney fo r a b o u t te n m onths.
