Dr. James Coomber, PT, DPT, COMT is the owner of Mana Physical Therapy, which opened its doors in July 2016. Dr. Coomber has specialized training as a Certified Orthopedic ManualTherapist. He decided to train in this postgraduate program to offer better and more effective care to his patients. The approach mastered in this certification is called the Maitland Approach. Unlike passive stretching, this approach uses precisely directed hands-on pressure to painful and stiff joints or the spine to alleviate discomfort and inflammation. The depth of pressure is guided by how painful or stiff a certain joint is. This technique can be used immediately after an injury to calm down pain and also used on chronically stiff joints. The depth of pressure is deeper on the latter. Many times a “tight muscle” will loosen and relax if the stiff joint near the muscle is mobilized. For example, the muscles at the neck and shoulder blade will relax after the joints of the upper back and neck are mobilized. The Maitland approach is validated by decades of research from peer-reviewed journals. There is a strong emphasis on integrating the most current research into the treatments, which provides the patient with the highest quality of treatment to date. Many times, Dr. Coomber has helped patients suffering from back and extremity pain after suffering for 5, 10 and even over 15 years. Dr. Coomber is truly excited about helping people feel normal again and has a special interest in the treatment of chronic pain. If you are suffering from any kind of pain, Dr. Coomber would love to see you for an examination or a free consultation at his office.
