Evolution

(Part Five)

I n November’s consideration of the subject of evolution there was intro duced a discussion of the evidence the evolutionist uses from organic variations to support his theory. It was pointed out that the fact of varia tion in living things does not conflict with the Christian’s concept of crea tion since the Christian expects to find such variations in nature. How ever, we saw that the evolutionist in terprets the facts of variation in such a way as to provide a mechanism for evolution. Thus it is the interpreta tion the evolutionist places upon the facts which is in conflict with crea tion and not the facts themselves. Now let us turn to a consideration of the source of variation as proposed by the evolutionist. Source of Variation In order to understand the mech anism responsible for producing the variants in a population it is neces sary to know something of how or ganisms inherit. A unit of heredity is called a gene. These genes are re sponsible for establishing the basic pattern of each individual. Differences in genes are responsible for many of the traits that differentiate one per son from another. So that a person with brown eyes will have a gene which is not quite the same as the one for blue eyes that someone else in the population might have. Each in dividual receives a unique combina tion of genes—half of which he ob tains from his mother and half from the father. The reason one person dif fers from another is because each has a combination of genes that is not duplicated in any other. Now the evolutionist says that the different combinations of genes that are present in the population are re sponsible for producing the variations. So far the Christian does not disagree because the type of differences that we have been discussing takes place within the limits of variation that God has permitted. But the evolu tionist does not stop here. He must

develop variations that will be so different as to necessitate calling the individual possessing them a new form. Now where do variations of this magnitude come from? The evo lutionist says that the process of mu tations must ultimately be responsi ble for them. A mutation can be loose ly defined as a change in a gene. Such a change will result in a change in the appearance of the organism carrying it. There is no doubt that God has established the mechanism of muta tion to produce much of the varia tion found in a population, but there is very little evidence that suggests that mutations can be responsible for producing the progressive types of changes which are needed in order for evolution to proceed. According to the evolutionist’s proposed mechan ism, mutations would have to bestow an advantage upon the organism pos sessing them. Unfortunately practical ly all the mutations that have been observed have turned out to be harm ful and thus of very little value to the organism. Of the very few that might be interpreted as being bene ficial none seem to lead to the prog ressive type of changes which are needed to explain the origin of new characteristics which differentiate the different groups of organisms. It should also be noted that man has been for centuries selecting, with in this God-given variability, to pro duce the various breeds of domesti cated plants and animals. The selec tion of man in these cases is given as a model of how the environment is supposed to work in the wild popu lations. It is obvious from this breed ing work that some of the organisms have a vast ability to vary. But it is also obvious that by selecting in this variability man has not been able to produce anything new, i.e., horses re main horses; dogs remain dogs, etc. We then see that the evolutionist has not established an adequate source for the type of changes he needs to produce total evolution.
