1C Workbook (Nick and Monica) May 2023

Dear Parents:

We are so excited to be teaching your children Spanish this year. It is an honor and not something we take lightly. We have designed a curriculum and program that consists of excellent one day a week instruction and then meaningful assignments to do at home. You have realized the value of exposing your child to a second language at a young age. The gift of learning a second language at a young age is priceless; your kids will truly thank you later! As your child learns Spanish, they are literally exercising their brain. This learning is sub-conscious, so as we speak almost 100% Spanish in class, they are learning sounds, vocabulary, grammar, accents, and intonations without even realizing it. They may think they just came to class and played, when in reality their brains are beginning to absorb a new language with a new set of rules, order, and structure.

The silent period:

Explanation of vocabulary:

1. Remind your child to stay positive and have fun participating in class. 2. Let them know I’ll be speaking almost 100% Spanish, and I will be directing them to speak it as well. 3. Cut out the vocabulary cards, have kids color them, and paste them on construction paper or a note card. Then, bring these to class. You may wish to keep them in a pencil case box. 4. Have fun on your journey to becoming bilingual! 5. Check out the glossary at the end of this book in addition to an online website that has all of our vocabulary and pronunciation. Though your children are on their way to becoming bilingual, please be aware of the term linguists call the “silent period.” Your child may be internalizing everything we are doing in class, but just not speaking yet. This is okay and to be expected. It’s just like your 1 1⁄2 year old that understands almost everything you say, but can only articulate 30 words. Allow the process of acquisition to take place naturally without putting a lot of pressure on your child to “perform” in Spanish. Each child progresses at a different speed when it comes to speaking their second language.

Many of the words we teach are considered high frequency, meaning they are used often in common speech. Our vocabulary may seem random at times to you, but the lists are not random; each word has been selected in a specific order for each class. In addition to those words, there are other “silly” words in the mix to aid in storytelling, conversation, and simply because they are fun!

On behalf of all the teachers from our Fun Fluency team I want to thank you for allowing us to work with your kids and we are so glad to be on this journey with you !

!Gracias! ¡Nos vemos!
