THE INNOVATION EDITION WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN, INNOVATION IS OFTEN AT THE FOREFRONT – WITH MANY DESIGNERS, ARCHITECTS AND MANUFACTURERS STRIVING TO CREATE SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING. HOWEVER, THE TREND FOR INNOVATION ISN’T JUST EXCLUSIVE TO THOSE WORKING WITHIN THE INDUSTRY. MORE HOMEOWNERS LOOK TO STYLE THEIR HOMES USING FORWARD- THINKING MATERIALS TO CREATE SPACES THAT ARE UNIQUE AND PERSONAL TO THEM.
In recent years, there has been an increased awareness around sustainability. Consumers are much more aware of the effect of human consumption and therefore are more interested in where their products are coming from. Businesses are having to adapt to meet this demand, often utilizing raw materials in an unconventional way, to develop products that are more environmentally and ethically sustainable. Moreover, modern construction methods are constantly evolving, and as new, advanced machinery is developed so too does our ability to create custom-made products. For example, enhancements within digital fabrication technology now allow designers to visualize and create complex three-dimensional forms that were previously unthinkable; presenting endless design possibilities.
As homeowners and designers look to create individual spaces, we have seen an emergence of the trend for personalization. With more consumers now requesting custom-made pieces, there is more space for designers to experiment creatively. When it comes to wood flooring, by simply looking at the raw materials with a fresh outlook and playing around with pattern or layout, truly unique floor coverings can be achieved. Innovation can also be seen through intelligent solutions that make everyday life more convenient. Intended for commercial application, Havwoods has recently introduced an innovative raised access flooring solution that does just that. Magna magnetic flooring provides accessibility to under floor services that cannot be installed within the wall cavities. This makes Magna an ideal choice for commercial spaces with an interesting configuration as designers can create schemes unrestricted by the building fabric.
8
Modern advancements across technology and construction methods, alongside a culture shift in relation to social issues surrounding sustainability, will continue to have a huge impact on the future of design. We look forward to watching the industry continue to evolve whilst continuing to showcase our own innovative solutions and design expertise. Yolande Meyer, our bespoke product buyer, will explain how she tracks the latest trends and brings the most exciting products to our expertly curated portfolio.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: YOLANDE MEYER
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
HAVWOODS IS ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT TO FIND THE NOT ONLY THE FINEST BUT ALSO THE MOST INTERESTING WOOD FLOORING AND CLADDING PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET. YOLANDE IS OUR SECRET WEAPON, SCOURING THE WORLD FOR NEW AND EXCITING PRODUCTS TO BRING TO THE MARKET. FIND OUT A LITTLE MORE ABOUT OUR BESPOKE PRODUCT BUYER...
I am originally from South Africa and moved to the UK in 2018 with my family. After University, I started my career working in the Fashion Retail industry, holding various positions throughout an 8-year period and ultimately finding my niche in researching trends and facilitating the buying process.
When did you join Havwoods and what is your role?
My journey with Havwoods started just over a year ago. I am currently fulfilling the role of a purchaser in the Bespoke Department and have recently taken on responsibility for New Product Development. How do you go about discovering new and exciting floor choices, and what is the process? Social media is your friend, especially in the current climate. People are increasingly using social media to communicate and stay in touch with the outside world. Social media enables you to draw upon ideas from a much wider range of people and this can be particularly enlightening. Sources I like to focus upon include suppliers launching new ideas and trend forecasters, offering their latest design predictions. Trend forecasters and trend forecasting blogs are also very important to follow. These authors spend countless hours analysing the market as well as the latest trends arising from trade shows and the market itself. Finally, I draw inspiration from our own product ranges. Creating new products that work in harmony with the current offering can open up an even wider market.

What do you see as the upcoming trends in wood flooring?
Why do you feel innovation is important?
I am pleased to mention that wood flooring is in a leading position among the most popular flooring trends for 2021. The main color trends include: whitewashed, light brown/natural, darker cool shades as well as two tone combinations. From Scandinavian inspirations, light woods will be a trend material for interiors. This wood will be used for flooring but also coverings for walls and ceilings. Taken from the design concept, whitewashed flooring and wider boards will also make their way to the top of the trend list for 2021. Whitewashed flooring has become very popular among interior designers due to the harmony that it creates, it also blends in very well with interior trends such as minimalism. Minimalism continues its rise in popularity and focusses upon the idea that less is more. Texture is another product attribute that deserves a mention. When it comes to texture, the more the better. Choices for textured products are endless but something with hand scraped bevels accompanied by wire-brushing will give a beautiful distressed look. Trendy layouts such as herringbone, chevrons and hexagons are rising in popular floor choices for 2021. Lastly, one concept that really stands out is combining two flooring materials into one area. Think about mediums such as wood and ceramic tiles – this is popular in studio type living spaces where one area flows into another. One such example that is very popular is hexagon ceramics mixed with hexagon wooden tiles in a kitchen or a bathroom area.
Innovation is important for any business. It facilitates growth and allows you to keep up with current trends and allow you to enter new markets. With innovation, it helps you to reinforce your brand in the marketplace. This can often be the main driver of success. You need people to talk about your brand continuously and sub consciously create a demand for your brand. Another aspect of innovation is not to only focus on completely new ideas, but to also focus on your current offering. By adding to, or developing on your current range, you can ensure you build upon your best sellers. Do you think the requirement for more sustainable flooring is increasing? Definitely. We, as consumers, are becoming more and more aware of our surroundings and our footprint on the planet. A big emphasis has been placed on global warming and how our current consumer trends are affecting the wellbeing of the planet. People are starting to take notice and realise that the power lies within us to change the future of our planet by making better consumer choices. These choices start from saying no to a plastic straw to demanding flooring from sustainable forests.

LOCATED IN LONDON’S THRIVING MEDIA CAPITAL, 35 SOHO SQUARE IS A STUNNING PERIOD BUILDING AND HOME TO THE BOUTIQUE WORKPLACE COMPANY. MANY OF THE ROOMS WITHIN THIS GRAND SPACE INCLUDE HIGH CEILINGS, FLOOR-LENGTH WINDOWS AND PERIOD FEATURES SUCH AS FIREPLACES. The refurbishment relocated the reception area to the front of the building, so that it had the opportunity to make a real statement and give visitors a fantastic first impression and true ‘wow’ experience. The vision for this project was to create a neutral background with floorboards from Havwoods . The Italian Collection was carefully selected as being the perfect option to showcase the beautiful furniture in all its glory, along with accentuating the lighting, artwork and unique joinery pieces. In addition, the wood flooring allowed the designer to play with the scale of the traditional square pattern parquet – the Italian Collection boards were the ideal product to achieve this look with, and the rich tones of the floor work perfectly within the design. Now, the space offers a striking and contemporary reception area with eye-catching furniture pieces, neon lighting and, of course, dramatic patterned wood flooring from Havwoods to complete the look.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION CENTER SAN JOSE, CA
Architect: Efficiency Lab for Architecture Photography Credits: Blake Marvin Product Used: HW2069 Holme
THE COMMUNITY INFORMATION CENTER FOR AN UPCOMING NURSERY-12 GRADE SCHOOL IN SAN JOSE IS A 10,000 SQFT ADAPTIVE REUSE PROJECT THAT CONVERTS HALF OF THE GROUND FLOOR OF A THREE-STORY EXISTING COMMERCIAL OFFICE BUILDING TO A RECEPTION/LOUNGE, AN 80 PERSON- PRESENTATION ROOM, MEETING ROOMS, INTERVIEW ROOMS AND STAFF OFFICES. The interior of the project is conceived as an open plan, defined by European Oak floors and acoustic ceiling fins stretching the entire space, creating visual continuity across. The existing office building is part of a small office park, surrounded by a parking lot. There are four existing redwood trees that are adjacent to one side of the building. The project establishes a new building entrance through the existing redwood trees, by creating concrete portals which carefully frame the view of the visitors away from the parking lot and direct them towards the trees.

26
A frame-less fabric scrim is stretched at the inside of the exterior windows to both diffuse the light and to block the views of the parking lot, creating a museum like spatial quality. By blurring the standard exterior mullion module, the scrim further accentuates the scale-lessness and the abstraction desired for the open plan. The window scrim is activated by projections in the presentation room and by the printed mission statement in the lounge. A 30-foot-long mullion-less two-pane glass partition acoustically separates the lounge area from the presentation room, while preserving the visual continuity of the open plan. The entry to the presentation room is through an orange threshold portal, accented by a cove light marking the edge of the frame. Staff offices located at the back are designed as open studio plan, and partial reglazing of the office area combined with the perimeter landscaping create a light filled studio environment.

As the clients were looking for herringbone blocks in long planks, UV treated and with a satin finish, this was the ideal solution. In addition, the flooring is low maintenance and durable, which was important, as one of the residents is a dog. Most importantly, the gorgeous oak tone worked extremely well in creating a stunning backdrop for the lovely art and furniture to be installed once the homeowners had happily moved in.

When it comes to choosing your forever floor, the overall effect is characterised not only by your choice of color but also by the natural grade of the wood, the surface finishing technique and the pattern. The type of pattern plays a leading part in the flooring portrait, so once you have decided on a color scheme, use the following guide to help you choose your favourite; from the popular plank style, a more adventurous pattern such as Herringbone, Tumbling Dice or Chevron, or maybe something more dramatic like the design panels available in numerous designs and shades.

MAKING THE GRADE
SINCE THERE IS NO INTERNATIONAL STANDARD FOR TIMBER GRADES, THESE ARE A GUIDE AS TO WHAT YOU MAY EXPECT. PLEASE DO REMEMBER THAT BOARDS ARE USUALLY SELECTED BY EYE AND THAT THESE PARAMETERS ARE SIMPLY A GUIDELINE.
PRIME Typically, prime grade has few, if any knots, and these will be of minimal size. There will also be a minimal amount of sapwood and filler, if any at all. Where filler is used its color is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and the color of the filler may vary from batch to batch. There will be a relatively small amount of color variation in the timber itself.
SELECT Typically, this grade will have a mix of almost prime boards with other planks which have more knots of a limited size. Expect some variation in tone from heartwood and sapwood as well as small checks (cracks across the growth ring). There will be some filled elements, such as broken knots, which will complement the natural character of the timber and may vary from batch to batch.
34
CLASSIC Classic grade floors show the natural variation of timber without allowing some of the more characterful features in more rustic grades. Planks with very few knots will be mixed with some planks containing larger knots or checks (cracks across the growth ring) which may be filled. Variation between tone from heartwood and sapwood can be expected but is controlled. Filler color is selected to complement the natural character of the timber and may vary from batch to batch.
CHARACTER Typically, character grade will include both heartwood and sapwood and allows a wider range of color variation. Knots are larger and you should expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). Filler will be used, the color of which is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and it may vary from batch to batch.
NATURAL/RUSTIC Known as either natural or rustic grade this allows a virtually limitless size and number of knots. Heartwood will be used, there will be color variation, sapwood and filler; you should also expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). The color of the filler is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.

FINISHING TECHNIQUES AND CHARACTERISTICS TO CREATE THE OUTSTANDING FINISHES WE OFFER, THE WOOD GOES THROUGH VARIOUS PROCESSES WHICH AFFECT DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOOD IN DIFFERENT WAYS. SOMETIMES COLORED OILS ARE ADDED TO PRODUCE AN EVEN MORE INDIVIDUAL APPEARANCE.
SAPWOOD
SMOKED & WHITE OILED
Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It is always lighter in color than the heartwood and certain fuming, smoking and coloring processes emphasise the sapwood since it doesn’t react to such treatments to the same degree. By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all Havwoods’ timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.
SMOKED
NATURAL OILED
36
SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF WOOD ARE PURELY NATURAL AND THESE ARE EXPLAINED BELOW.
KNOTS & FILLERS
A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colors: white, grey, brown and black are shown here.
MEDULLARY RAYS, CHECKS & SHAKES
These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.
SMOKING AND FIRING GRADES
SINGLE SMOKED
Smoking and fuming are essentially the same and refer to a process whereby the hardwood is exposed to ammonia gas for 24 (single) or 48 (double) hours. The coloration is surface deep only. Unlike staining, smoking reacts to the chemical composition of the individual plank, so the ultimate shade will vary. This variation is considered an asset, however if you prefer a more even tone we suggest you consider choosing stained rather than smoked wood. Fired products are treated in a vacuum, sometimes for several weeks, and the dark color runs throughout the lamella providing a genuine visual alternative to tropical hardwoods.
DOUBLE SMOKED
THERMO
37
PATTERNS THERE ARE VARIOUS DIFFERENT TYPES OF DESIGNS OR PATTERNS AVAILABLE. STANDARD PLANK IS THE MOST COMMON STYLE BUT YOU MAY DECIDE ON SOMETHING MORE INTERESTING LIKE A HERRINGBONE OR CHEVRON.
PLANK
HERRINGBONE
Solid blocks and larger engineered wood blocks means you can create many different sizes in this pattern. Herringbone blocks may be laid in single or double patterns, or if they are the correct proportion you will be able to produce patterns called ‘Tumbling Dice’ ‘Basket weave’ and ‘Ladder’ patterns.
This is sometimes known as plank, strip or boards and is available in many different lengths and widths.

FINISHES
UV CURED HARDWAX OIL Combining the wear advantages of a lacquer with the subtlety of oil, this nish is micro-porous, water-repellent, dirt-, wear-, and stain-resistant against wine, beer, cola, coffee, tea, fruit juices and milk. It will not crack, ake, peel or blister. VALOUR UV OILED Valour is a film-forming oil that allows the surface to be layered like a lacquer but retains the appearance and characteristics of an oil. It is scratch and impact resistant and offers the hardest wearing oiled finish in our range.
LACQUERED This is normally a polyurethane coating that covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient surface, protecting it from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden oor for anything from 12 months to 6 years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic. OILED Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the color and grain, as well as providing protection for the oor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled oors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage.

THE BENEFITS OF USING TIMBER
ENSURE THE WOOD YOU USE IS THE RIGHT WOOD SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Of course, you always want to deal with reputable timber companies who wouldn’t dream of importing illegally logged timber. Many timber suppliers will tell you, often in good faith, that their supplies are from ‘sustainable’ or ‘managed’ sources, or from plantations. But, without an independent certification system, in practice there is often no way of verifying this, or of demonstrating to your clients that you have met their expectations. ENSURE THE WOOD YOU USE IS THE RIGHT WOOD
HERE AT HAVWOODS, WE DO OUR UTMOST TO ENSURE OUR TIMBER IS ETHICALLY AND SUSTAINABLY SOURCED. THIS INCLUDES BEING CERTAIN THAT WE’RE WORKING WITH REPUTABLE TIMBER COMPANIES WHO AREN’T INVOLVED WITH IMPORTING ILLEGALLY LOGGED WOOD FROM AROUND THE WORLD. MANY TIMBER SUPPLIERS WILL TELL YOU, OFTEN IN GOOD FAITH, THAT THEIR SUPPLIES ARE FROM ‘MANAGED’ OR ‘SUSTAINABLE’ SOURCES, OR FROM PLANTATIONS. HOWEVER, UNLESS THEY HAVE AN INDEPENDENT CERTIFICATION SYSTEM IN PLACE, THERE’S REALLY NO CERTAIN WAY TO VERIFY THEIR SOURCES, OR FOR YOU TO DEMONSTRATE TO YOUR CLIENTS THAT YOU’VE MET THEIR EXPECTATIONS FOR ETHICAL TRADING. social and political empowerment. DESIGN FROM HAVWOODS
The home of Havwoods’ herringbone, chevron, and Versailles pattern wood flooring, this exceptional collection includes both engineered and solid construction boards, alongside the introduction of a select range of genuine reclaimed wood. Sourced from a multitude of mills, each distinctive design is presented in a breath of beautiful wood tones and quality finishes. The range also welcomes the introduction of Havwoods’ new wood blocks. A beautifully patterned floor can be created with ease from a choice of three geometric shapes: Mansion Weave, Hexagons and Stretch Hexagons. Opt for a single wood finish, or mix and match from a choice of three contrasting wood colors.

THE ITALIAN COLLECTION
22/08/2018 16:31
Inspired by the intricate floors of Italy, The Italian Collection comprises of chevron, herringbone and plank style boards, available in a spectrum of shades. Narrower in form and offering a thinner composition, their size offers the flexibility to create more complex flooring patterns. Combine various wood flooring designs together for a mix-and-match look, or complement with tiles in porcelain, ceramic or glass for a trend-led finish. All boards feature a traditional tongue and groove profile, and are surfaced with a lacquer or oiled finish. The majority of the collection includes FSC Certified timber (FSC-C009500).
