WORKING WITH LIGHT HOW SOURCES OF LIGHT, LIGHT COLOR, AND DIFFERENT SHADES OF WOOD FLOOR WORK TOGETHER.

Light has a vital role to play when designing interiors, as it has the ability to change the mood and ambience of a room, just as much as it can cleverly manipulate the size and shape of a space. Light also has a significant effect on how wood flooring can look, from the color of the boards, to the perceived size of the planks. Combine lighting techniques with the effects of a light colored wood floorboard, such as white or a grey, can instantly lift a room from dark and dismal, to bright and spacious. As seen in our Loft project, our beautiful Fendi board (from the Venture Plank collection) is visually accentuated by the elegant, light-filled space that is made bright and airy through white walls, large windows and a stunning skylight.

This example of natural light helps to emphasise Fendi wood’s characteristics - natural grains and knotting which adds an appealing sense of personality to the room, plus the intriguing color variation of each board. The effect of sunshine and light quality on wood flooring offers an opportunity to be playful within interiors and embrace seasonal changes throughout the year – creating a space that is cool and welcoming during some months, and warm and relaxing during others.

7

Light can also be used to create rich and dramatic spaces, especially when utilised to accentuate dark wood flooring. In darker rooms, natural light can provide a more spacious feel to any space, whereas pendant or statement lighting offers a more stylised finishing look. Dark wood flooring offers a classic, timeless and traditional look that can act as a sophisticated backdrop to furniture and walls. However, it’s easy for dark floors to become too intense and overpowering without clever planning. Light can be used to brighten and highlight, transforming dark wood into a stunning focal point, creating rich and dramatic spaces in combination with other lighter design elements.

For a harmonious aesthetic, wood furniture should match the warmth of the floors, but be a few shades lighter. For example, grey or dark wood floors work well with pale, weathered furniture, and warm, rich floors work better with medium- to light-toned wood furniture like cherry or maple. Lighter wood furniture and white walls will provide contrast to dark wood floors without appearing stark.

8

Sunshine isn’t the only light that can have an effect on the look of wood flooring - artificial light can also have a dramatic impact and the effect should not be underestimated. Incandescent and soft white florescent bulbs intensify warm wood colors but tend to fade cooler colors, while halogen and full-spectrum bulbs most closely mimic the bright light of natural sunlight. The same product can appear warm and rich under one light, and then cool and stark under another. Depending on the wood material and finish, wood flooring can be a reflective surface, much like a tile, meaning that its warmth can appear yellow or golden in color depending on the light shining upon it, otherwise it may appear completely washed out under an artificial light. By using multiple sources of artificial lighting and ensuring that all darker areas of flooring are well lit, you can open up a room that can, in the wrong light, feel compact. The type of light fixtures in the room will also affect the way wood flooring looks. Indirect lighting aims light towards ceilings or walls to highlight certain areas and, similarly, lampshades can change the look of flooring too, depending on the color of the shade and the strength of the lightbulb.

END GRAIN PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

BEAUTIFUL END GRAIN WOOD FLOORING IS VISUALLY DRAMATIC AND MAKES ANY SPACE TRULY UNIQUE. End grain is the grain of wood seen when it is cut across the growth rings. Rather than cutting a plank of wood the length of the trunk, end grain wood is cut at a 90-degree angle to the grain. This type of cut exposes the character of the wood rings and graining and as with a chopping block, the surface of an end-grain tile is incredibly tough and durable. Our end grain collection boards are all glued to a backing, to ensure a more stable engineered floor. We are proud to introduce 16 new colors to our Henley Collection.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: ANTHONY SCOTT

What’s your favorite place you have ever visited and why? Yallingup, Margaret River Western Australia. The beach is one of the world’s top surfing venues and we stayed in and amazing Beach House that belonged to the Owner of Rusty Surf brand. The views to wake up to were amazing!! What’s your favorite design trend or style and why? Biophilic design. I’m fortunate to live in an area bordering a forest and literally as soon as I step in there my mind clears. If everyone can bring elements of that into their homes and workplaces, it can only be a good thing. What do you like most about working at Havwoods? The culture. We have a quality product, great marketing, great pricing... but the fun we have whilst providing these elements is what makes working at Havwoods so unique. Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? To listen more than you talk. Understanding people’s needs both professionally, and personally is so important.

What’s your role at Havwoods? Director of our North America business. I work with each department to manage the company’s presence in the US and Canada. What’s something fun or interesting we might not know about you? I’m trying (very slowly!) to renovate a classic motorcycle that’s nearly 60 years old. What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? Meeting with Architects and Designers and seeing someone’s dream on paper (or screen!), and to have our product as part of that vision. What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional? Personally it has to be family: my 3 unique boys. Professionally, it would be starting in the warehouse at Havwoods and literally working my way through the company to Director. That gives me a sense of touch with the whole company. If you could do any other job for just one day, what would it be? F1 racing driver!

THE HAVWOODS NORTH AMERICA TEAM IS HEADED BY ANTHONY SCOTT, A 21-YEAR HAVWOODS VETERAN WHO’S WORKED IN (ALMOST) EVERY DEPARTMENT. BRINGING BOTH PASSION AND KNOWLEDGE TO THE GROUP, ANTHONY SPLITS HIS TIME BETWEEN THE US AND UK, BRINGING THE TEAM GLOBAL COHESIVENESS.

RIGGS DC WASHINGTON DC

The properties you work on each have a very distinct personality, what did you keep in mind when designing them? Each project so far for me has been very unique and needed a fresh start each time. Not just the building itself but the neighbourhoods, cities, communities and stories we wanted to tell were very specific to Riggs in DC, Sea Containers and the Pulitzer in Amsterdam. This fresh perspective makes our job much harder, but worth it as the results are very rewarding. Since this is a historic property, what elements were important to keep intact in the design process? The building was built to be a very imposing example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture during the golden age of banking. Few examples survive. The building then went through a couple of transformations from a bank, to a school, and then a more mainstream hotel. A lot of the original interior details were lost, especially with what would have been the office floors. However, the façade and many interior features on the main ground floor remained. We wanted to highlight all the historic features we fell in love with, the imposing granite façade, the barrel-vaulted coffered entrance ceiling, the Corinthian columns holding up a 22-foot- high classic coffered ceiling. Some elements from the hotel’s days as a bank were recovered, and in some places, newly discovered. We aimed to highlight these historical, but recreate exactly like a museum. We restored what needed to be restored, but not to a degree that we eliminated some of the wear and tear that we think adds to the heritage and age of the building. The final interior celebrates the grandeur and history but mixes in new and playful elements; Some are a nod to the banking past (like the reception desk, a piece inspired by old school teller counters) and some more playful pieces that play of the scale of the spaces (the giant flower case for example).

How does flooring play an important role in design? Flooring has been a way for us to bring some heritage back into the buildings. This can sometime be limiting because flooring in a hospitality environment needs to very durable, yet still add warmth and character. You chose a combination of different Havwoods’ flooring. What made you pick these products for each space? Within the project we have several different unique spaces, and each deserved a new approach. This allows us to choose what is right for each of these “mini” projects to add range and diversity throughout.

Were there any major obstacles you had to overcome in the project? There are always new things to learn in a new market, like DC was for us, and to also understand how to enforce quality control during the project. We have high standards so the choice of our materials, and how each are installed, is very important to us. What style would you call the Riggs Hotel? I would say it is a style that plays with history as it’s bank - but with playful, and colorful accents. This creates an environment that is not serious, yet the spaces feel elegant, and cosy within all the grandeur. Whatever work we do, we take it very seriously, but we never take ourselves too seriously.

A LOOK INTO THE FOUR ‘FIRST LADY’ SUITES AT THE RIGGS DC

24

What do you want guests to feel when experiencing the different spaces: lobby, the bar, their rooms, etc.? The most rewarding moment is when visitors feel elevated as they enter into a space, whether it is for the first time or regularly. We deliberately plan several ‘moments’ along any guest or visitor’s journey through the hotel. But at the same time, we have more discreet moments where they may find something special that means something to them.

What’s your favourite way to incorporate color?

Color is really hard. It is important to be balanced and have subtle moments where appropriate, and have more “wow” moments where needed. Some things do not need to shout, while certain places need a little boost - we achieve this through color. BUT for me the important thing is to be brave with color when you feel like it. Color is confidence. How do you stay inspired? I am an observer and I am always very aware of my surroundings. I am inspired but the most unusual things sometimes. I do not believe in trends and I believe everything has a place somewhere, you just need to know (and feel) when it is right and when it is wrong.

SCIENCE MUSEUM LONDON

Architect: Wilkinson Eyre Main Contractor: IntParagon Installer: Loughton Contracts Photographer: Calvert Studios

Products Used: HW16620 Caffe Chevron from Italian Collection

The home of human scientific ingenuity, the Science Museum in London is a world famous attraction, welcoming visitors from all across the globe. With over two years of planning involved, the recently launched Medicine Galleries at the museum is the largest of its kind in the world. The new gallery required a traditional, beautiful quality finish for its flooring using only the highest specification of products to impress visitors.

26

27

28

For the first floor gallery, featuring a 500 foot long space, Havwoods was able to supply Caffe chevron from the Italian Collection. An engineered oak chevron, this board was selected for its clean grade with a clear finish, which resulted in a classic but clinical feel. The installation team was required to install over 47,000 individual pieces of timber, equivalent to 17.9 miles!

HARVEY NICHOLS STORE AND RESTAURANT BIRMINGHAM, UNITED KINGDOM

Designers Virgile And Partners wanted to continue the complex graphic- shaped flooring, created in tiles of varying colors and sizes throughout the store, into the private dining room and the first floor beauty rooms, but using wood for greater warmth. The brief for the new Harvey Nichols store in Birmingham was to create a contemporary and imaginative boutique environment; moving away from a department store approach and revitalising the intrinsic values of the brand: style, daring, creativity and wit. The theme is one of ‘controlled disruption’ with a free flow store layout, disparate materials and contrasting textures. The intricate patterns of triangles, rhombi and trapezoids were created by Havwoods Bespoke using select grade oak, brushed, smoked, sanded and finished with white hard wax oil, and delivered to site as pre-finished engineered panels.

33

MAKING THE GRADE

SINCE THERE IS NO INTERNATIONAL STANDARD FOR TIMBER GRADES, THESE ARE A GUIDE AS TO WHAT YOU MAY EXPECT. PLEASE DO REMEMBER THAT BOARDS ARE USUALLY SELECTED BY EYE AND THAT THESE PARAMETERS ARE SIMPLY A GUIDELINE.

PRIME Typically, prime grade has few, if any knots, and these will be of minimal size. There will also be a minimal amount of sapwood and filler, if any at all. Where filler is used its color is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and the color of the filler may vary from batch to batch. There will be a relatively small amount of color variation in the timber itself.

SELECT Typically, this grade will have a mix of almost prime boards with other planks which have more knots of a limited size. Expect some variation in tone from heartwood and sapwood as well as small checks (cracks across the growth ring). There will be some filled elements, such as broken knots, which will complement the natural character of the timber and may vary from batch to batch.

34

CLASSIC Classic grade floors show the natural variation of timber without allowing some of the more characterful features in more rustic grades. Planks with very few knots will be mixed with some planks containing larger knots or checks (cracks across the growth ring) which may be filled. Variation between tone from heartwood and sapwood can be expected but is controlled. Filler color is selected to complement the natural character of the timber and may vary from batch to batch.

CHARACTER Typically, character grade will include both heartwood and sapwood and allows a wider range of color variation. Knots are larger and you should expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). Filler will be used, the color of which is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and it may vary from batch to batch.

NATURAL/RUSTIC Known as either natural or rustic grade this allows a virtually limitless size and number of knots. Heartwood will be used, there will be color variation, sapwood and filler; you should also expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). The color of the filler is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.

35

FINISHING TECHNIQUES AND CHARACTERISTICS TO CREATE THE OUTSTANDING FINISHES WE OFFER, THE WOOD GOES THROUGH VARIOUS PROCESSES WHICH AFFECT DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOOD IN DIFFERENT WAYS. SOMETIMES COLORED OILS ARE ADDED TO PRODUCE AN EVEN MORE INDIVIDUAL APPEARANCE.

SAPWOOD

SMOKED & WHITE OILED

Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It is always lighter in color than the heartwood and certain fuming, smoking and coloring processes emphasise the sapwood since it doesn’t react to such treatments to the same degree. By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all Havwoods’ timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.

SMOKED

NATURAL OILED

36

SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF WOOD ARE PURELY NATURAL AND THESE ARE EXPLAINED BELOW.

KNOTS & FILLERS

A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colors: white, grey, brown and black are shown here.

MEDULLARY RAYS, CHECKS & SHAKES

These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.

SMOKING AND FIRING GRADES

SINGLE SMOKED

Smoking and fuming are essentially the same and refer to a process whereby the hardwood is exposed to ammonia gas for 24 (single) or 48 (double) hours. The coloration is surface deep only. Unlike staining, smoking reacts to the chemical composition of the individual plank, so the ultimate shade will vary. This variation is considered an asset, however if you prefer a more even tone we suggest you consider choosing stained rather than smoked wood. Fired products are treated in a vacuum, sometimes for several weeks, and the dark color runs throughout the lamella providing a genuine visual alternative to tropical hardwoods.

DOUBLE SMOKED

THERMO

37

PATTERNS THERE ARE VARIOUS DIFFERENT TYPES OF DESIGNS OR PATTERNS AVAILABLE. STANDARD PLANK IS THE MOST COMMON STYLE BUT YOU MAY DECIDE ON SOMETHING MORE INTERESTING LIKE A BLOCK OR HERRINGBONE.

HERRINGBONE

PLANK

Solid blocks and larger engineered wood blocks means you can create many different sizes in this pattern. Herringbone blocks may be laid in single or double patterns, or if they are the correct proportion you will be able to produce patterns called ‘Tumbling Dice’ ‘Basket weave’ and ‘Ladder’ patterns.

This is sometimes known as plank, strip or boards and is available in many different lengths and widths.

38

PANELS WE HAVE A HUGE SELECTION OF PANELS IN DIFFERENT DESIGNS AND ALSO AVAILABLE IN GENUINE RECLAIMED WOOD.

VERSAILLES

GORD

FINISHES

OILED Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the color and grain, as well as providing protection for the oor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled oors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage.

UV CURED HARDWAX OIL Combining the wear advantages of a lacquer with the subtlety of oil, this nish is micro-porous, water-repellent, dirt-, wear-, and stain-resistant against wine, beer, cola, coffee, tea, fruit juices and milk. It will not crack, ake, peel or blister.

LACQUERED This is normally a polyurethane coating that covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient surface, protecting it from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden oor for anything from 12 months to 6 years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic.

39

THE BENEFITS OF USING TIMBER

ENSURE THE WOOD YOU USE IS THE RIGHT WOOD SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Of course, you always want to deal with reputable timber companies who wouldn’t dream of importing illegally logged timber. Many timber suppliers will tell you, often in good faith, that their supplies are from ‘sustainable’ or ‘managed’ sources, or from plantations. But, without an independent certification system, in practice there is often no way of verifying this, or of demonstrating to your clients that you have met their expectations. ENSURE THE WOOD YOU USE IS THE RIGHT WOOD

HERE AT HAVWOODS, WE DO OUR UTMOST TO ENSURE OUR TIMBER IS ETHICALLY AND SUSTAINABLY SOURCED. THIS INCLUDES BEING CERTAIN THAT WE’RE WORKING WITH REPUTABLE TIMBER COMPANIES WHO AREN’T INVOLVED WITH IMPORTING ILLEGALLY LOGGED WOOD FROM AROUND THE WORLD. MANY TIMBER SUPPLIERS WILL TELL YOU, OFTEN IN GOOD FAITH, THAT THEIR SUPPLIES ARE FROM ‘MANAGED’ OR ‘SUSTAINABLE’ SOURCES, OR FROM PLANTATIONS. HOWEVER, UNLESS THEY HAVE AN INDEPENDENT CERTIFICATION SYSTEM IN PLACE, THERE’S REALLY NO CERTAIN WAY TO VERIFY THEIR SOURCES, OR FOR YOU TO DEMONSTRATE TO YOUR CLIENTS THAT YOU’VE MET THEIR EXPECTATIONS FOR ETHICAL TRADING. social and political empowerment. DESIGN FROM HAVWOODS

The home of Havwoods’ herringbone, chevron, and Versailles pattern wood flooring, this exceptional collection includes both engineered and solid construction boards, alongside the introduction of a select range of genuine reclaimed wood. Sourced from a multitude of mills, each distinctive design is presented in a breath of beautiful wood tones and quality finishes. The range also welcomes the introduction of Havwoods’ new wood blocks. A beautifully patterned floor can be created with ease from a choice of three geometric shapes: Mansion Weave, Hexagons and Stretch Hexagons. Opt for a single wood finish, or mix and match from a choice of three contrasting wood colors.

THE ITALIAN COLLECTION

22/08/2018 16:31

Inspired by the intricate floors of Italy, The Italian Collection comprises of chevron, herringbone and plank style boards, available in a spectrum of shades. Narrower in form and offering a thinner composition, their size offers the flexibility to create more complex flooring patterns. Combine various wood flooring designs together for a mix-and-match look, or complement with tiles in porcelain, ceramic or glass for a trend-led finish. All boards feature a traditional tongue and groove profile, and are surfaced with a lacquer or oiled finish. The majority of the collection includes FSC Certified timber (FSC-C009500).
