know what questions to ask, how can you be sure you’re getting a system that will work? Without the detail, how can you know for sure what you are buying. “For example, vendors eager to win business will often undersize dust filters. How can you determine that the fil- ter in your quote might be too small? You find out by know- ing what to ask. Start with these three questions: What is the filter area? What is the air-to-cloth ratio? What is the estimated filter life for the type of filter proposed for your application? “The dust collector (filter) is typically 1/3 of the cost of an air conveyed trim and dust collection system. If the air- to-cloth ratio isn’t listed in the quote, the filter is probably undersized and will either not work at all or it will require frequent filter media changeouts to maintain suction. “If you want the least amount of nuisance dust, pres- sure balanced, pulse jet cartridge filters are the way to go. This type of filter uses compressed air for filter clean- ing, with filter cartridges with cartridges lasting for 18 to 24 months or longer depending on dust load, hours run and compressed air quality. With optional dust airlock(s) and dust briquetters, nuisance dust can be significantly reduced. Cartridge type filters can be installed either in- doors or outdoors, saving valuable floor space. “If you want a system with maximum dust control and uptime, a pressure balanced system is your best bet. Sys- tems that utilize airlocks in the trim waste stream are, in our opinion, a last resort since airlocks in the material stream are susceptible to jams and require maintenance. Manual balancing does not work long-term and is only a temporary solution. “Active Real Time Pressure Balancing is much more reliable than other types of systems and has noticeably less nuisance dust at the baler. G.F. Puhl’s Real Time Ac- tive Pressure Balanced systems utilize a balance blower to maintain near zero pressure in the baler feed chute which helps avoid dust blowout. “Remember, if a quote seems too good to be true, it probably is. The devil is always in the details. That’s why you should require vendors to give you ALL the details.” Email sales@gfpuhl.com.
