Celebrating KOBI-TV/NBC5’s 70th Anniversary Medford, OR | July 31, 2023 | Press Release T his year KOBI-TV/NBC5 is celebrating its 70th anniversary. In 1953, William B. Smullin signed KOBI-TV/NBC5 on the air. It was the first VHF
TV station in Oregon, and it remains one of the very few TV stations in the country that is still locally owned and operated. Currently, KOBI-TV/NBC5 and KOTI-TV/NBC2 are owned by Patsy Smullin, daughter of William B. Smullin and President of COBi, KOBI’s parent company. Recently, Patsy sat down with NBC5 News for a Five on 5 interview focusing on this special anniversary and the rich history of service to the communities in Southern Oregon and Northern California. To celebrate this anniversary year, KOBI-TV/NBC5 has partnered with the United Way of Jackson County to share stories of kindness, civility, generosity, and charity. The campaign is called “United in Kindness” and throughout the year NBC5 will be featuring stories on kindness from their partners in the community.
