CEO | Century City Property Owners’ Association Chris Blackshaw T he year 2022 is nearing the end and what a year it has been! We have been able to move on from the COVID-19 restrictions and make positive strides for- ward in enhancing the Century City experience. Our num- bers generally are back to pre-pandemic levels and we are particularly happy with the return of school groups and vis- itors to Intaka Island as well as the at times record atten- dances at our various markets. One of my personal highlights of the year is the completion of Ratanga Park. This beautiful public green space has been a fantastic addition to Centu- ry City and it is being appreciated by families with children who enjoy the safe place to play outdoors, walkers and jog- gers - and is the new start and finish of the popular Century City parkrun. Earlier this month it was the venue for a well attended and successful Carols in the Park evening. And it is amazing to see the birdlife that is already thriving in the area. W e wish our stakeholders, community, and all Cen- tury City visitors a wonderful festive season. May you enjoy a safe and rewarding downtime and we look forward to a positive and prosperous 2023.

It’s festive! This year-end edition of City Edits celebrates togetherness, family, community and all that Centu- ry City promotes and represents: a safe and beautiful place to live, work and relax in. We have been incredibly fortunate that all our markets made triumphant returns and it has been wonderful to see people let their hair down, connect with one another and enjoy themselves. We are looking forward to an exhilarating calendar next year, with our largest event, the Century City Sports Festival taking place the first weekend of March. There are also a few new ventures around the corner, with the Intaka Kids’ Club launching in January. Keep an eye on our social platforms for updates on this exciting mem- bership opportunity for little explorers. W ishing you a season filled with love, happiness, re- flection, and relaxation.

After a two-year hiatus, Century City hosted the ever-pop- ular Century City Carols on Sunday 4 December in its new venue, Ratanga Park. Teaming up with Planetshakers Church once again, a festive evening full of fun activities for the kids, classic Christmas carols and spectacular views under the stars were enjoyed by all. With an overall cheerful atmosphere as children danced around, had their faces painted, played on the outdoor gymnasium and swings, while keeping an eye out for Santa. Families and friends found their spots on the lawn and by 18:00, most of best places were already taken. A spectacular pink sunset set the tone of the evening as the Planetshakers’ singers took to the stage to get the festivities going. “There was a wonderful spirit of joy and community,” says Marinus Boshoff, Safety & Security Manager, responsible for the logistics of the event. “We hosted approximately 2 000 people, which was a fantastic attendance! We are delighted that so many Capetonians from surrounding neighbour- hoods in addition to our own Century City community came out to sing along and we look forward to hosting a bigger and better event next year.”

CENTURY CITY REMAINS A SMART PLACE TO WORK

Century City remains a smart place to work as Rabie’s offices fill up Century City remains a smart place to work, evident in Rabie’s office vacancies dropping to a mere 1% at the end of September. Concentrated in the Bridgeways precinct, Rabie’s commercial portfolio vacancy rates sketched a very different picture at the beginning of 2022, as a substantial portion of the new offices in Bridgewater were affected by the work from home trend. “Fortunately, we have let over 30 000 square metres since the beginning of the year,” says Colin Anderson, COO at Rabie. “With the fantastic assistance of brokers from various companies, we concluded about 25 leases, which includes a number of international and tech companies.”

44

OUR SMART CITY

“Companies are realising that in order to get their staff back in the office, they need to make it more desirable,” continues Anderson. “It’s not only important how your office is designed and how it looks on the inside, but your experience when you arrive and leave the office is paramount to your overall work satisfaction. You want to feel safe; you want to pop out for something to eat or take a walk to clear your head, perhaps exercise be- fore or after work. To this point, the walkability of the Bridgeways precinct is unique and offers a balanced workday. There are 13 restaurants and coffee shops, five hotels, a world-class conference centre, gym, the beau- tiful Ratanga Park and Canal Walk Shopping Centre, all

within easy walking distance. In addition, there are over 1 800 undercover bays and open parking areas that are available for public parking in the precinct.” The Century City Property Owners’ Association’s bi- annual survey conducted earlier this year showed dis- tinctly that safety and security is the number one pri- ority for residents, business owners and people who work in the precinct. It also indicated that stakehold- ers are extremely satisfied with the level of safety and security in the precinct. In addition to this, the way that the precinct is managed from an infrastructure and maintenance point of view to landscaping and transport, makes Century City a smart place to work.

4145

“Whether companies have a hybrid model or full-time office approach, there is most definitely a valuable place for top-notch office space in desirable surroundings.” says Anderson. “This is illustrated in a survey which Microsoft recently concluded amongst their employees regarding the office and work from home debate. An excerpt of their reports reads: “The desire among em- ployees to reconnect with co-workers dovetails nicely with a powerful organizational need: to rebuild social capital.”

46

Anderson concludes “As corporates start to encourage their staff back to the office, even if on a hybrid format, it is important that the office environment is a happy place for the employee.”

Red-billed Teal Did you know that Red-billed Teals typically feed in pairs or small groups? They feed by dabbling and dipping their heads underwater and upending their bodies into the water to reach deeper food. At this time, you can only see the tail and vent above the surface. They also frequent mudflats and feed in the fields at night.

ARTS TRAIL AT CENTURY CITY CONFERENCE CENTRE Lionel Smit Lionel Smit is considered one of South Africa’s most talented artists, best known for his contemporary portraiture execut- ed through monumental canvases and sculptures. Perhaps more than anything else, Smit’s art is defined by a deeply rooted symbiotic relationship between sculpture and paint- ing. Born in 1982 in Pretoria, South Africa, Smit was exposed to a world of sculpture though his father, renowned sculptor An- ton Smit, who worked from his studio adjacent to the family home. The Century City Conference Centre currently hosts two of Smit’s artworks – one on the exterior of the building and one at the reception area.

Sarah Dane Jarett Danes has created 400 works, almost half of which have sold to international buyers with works in private collection from Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Ireland and England. Danes has completed roughly 50 commission and upon frequent requests has donated numerous works for charity auctions. The Century City Conference Centre currently houses two of her colourful pieces, which adorn the walls of the ground floor.

Two of Pharoah’s pieces decorate the walls of the Century City Conference Centre’s foyer.

Buhle Mtakatya

Mtakatya is a local artist from Cape Town that was raised in the well-known informal settlement called Khayelitsha.

CENTURY CLASSIC CAR & BIKE RUN It was a wonderful spectacle on Sunday 20 November as shiny classic cars gathered in Century City. The occasion was the Century Classic Car & Bike Run hosted by Triumph Sports Car Club and featured cars and motorbikes and drivers whose combined ages exceed 100 years. Vehicles gathered at Century Avenue and from here, embarked on a 100km journey through scenic roads, ending off at the Wine- lands Light Railway near Stellenbosch for a picnic and prize giv- ing for those making particular milestones.

FUN FACT ABOUT COCKTAILS

1. Cocktails became far more popular during Prohibition because they were a way to disguise the alcoholic content of a beverage. Gin and Vodka also replaced Rum and Whisky as primary cocktail ingredients during this period because they were easier to make illegally and didn’t need to be aged for as long. 2. The origin of the term “cocktail”is unknown, but it appears to have first appeared in a British newspaper in 1798. There’s a theory that the word “cocktail”represents the cocked tail of a perky horse, a reference to the fact that the first cocktails were meant to perk you up.
