One tip for finding time to include physical therapy into your life is taking a look at your schedule and blocking out time for your physical health. Does your schedule leave little time to fit in physical activity? Perhaps you have a full day of commuting to and from your 9-5 job, preparing your kids for their summer excursions, volunteering, or acting as a chauffeur while the kids are out of school. However, even adding 30 minutes into your busy routine for a quick PT session with your therapist can make a big difference in helping maintain your physical function. In addition to finding time for physical therapy, try your best to set aside some time each day to exercise. Try taking a walk during your lunch break, going to the gym in the morning before making your commute, or even treating yourself to an exercise class a couple nights a week – you deserve it!

At Physical Therapy & Rehab Specialists, we will work around your busy schedule to find a time that works best for you – so you can still get all your summer activities done while still taking care of yourself and continuing your physical therapy sessions! For more information on keeping physical therapy sessions as part of your routine during the busy summer months, don’t hesitate to contact Physical Therapy & Rehab Specialists today. I’m having trouble finding time for physical therapy – what should I do? As the saying goes, “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” If you are looking to keep your physical therapy sessions as part of your routine, we can find a way to help you fit that into your busy schedule.

Physical therapy is still essential, no matter the time of year. Physical therapy is a great way to make sure you are still in optimum health and your body is strong while you tackle your summer activities. Additionally, physical therapy can not only help the body stay strong and heal as quickly as possible, but it can also help combat illness – which, as we all know, is important now more than ever. The individualized stretches and exercises we prescribe for your treatment plan are great ways to boost your immune system. When your body is in shape, it quite literally has more strength to fight off unwanted viruses. Aiming for at least 20-30 minutes of physical activity a day can help strengthen not only you, but your immune system as well. Additionally, our physical therapists can help with nutritional services, which can prove to be a difficult task for many while running around

7 TIPS TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM

When your body is flexible, strong, well-balanced, and fueled by a nutritious diet, it is able to fight infection and reduce the impact of viruses. Here are 8 things you can do every day to help maintain a healthy immune system: 1. Keep a Positive Mindset. A positive mindset has been linked with lower rates of depression, resistance to the common cold, and better cardiovascular health. 2. Stay Hydrated. Proper hydration improves brain function, helps deliver oxygen to the body, lubricates joints, and is essential for cell growth, replication, and survival. Aim to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water each day (and more if you are active or sweating). 3. Eat Your Vegetables. Vegetables rich in nutrients that help support immunity (vitamins C, B6, and E) include yellow bell peppers, kale, broccoli, spinach, peas, potatoes, carrots, and avocados. Quercetin (a flavonoid found in onions, grapes, capers, and black and green tea) is believed to have antiviral properties. 4. Consume Vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a key role in immune health. When you are deficient in vitamin D, you may have an increased risk of respiratory infection. Spend time outside whenever possible, consume natural foods like

fatty fish and yogurt, and consider taking a supplement to ensure you are getting as much as you need every day. 5. Consume Essential Fatty Acids. The benefits are almost endless: improved cardiovascular health, muscle tissue maintenance, mental and cognitive improvement, and reduced inflammation. Fish and seafood are generally the best sources of essential fatty acids, especially salmon, mackerel, albacore tuna, trout, sardines, and swordfish. 6. Move For 30-60 Minutes Each Day. Whether it’s a bodyweight and resistance band workout, a long walk, bike ride, or run, the benefits of movement and exercise are endless: improved mood, reduced insulin sensitivity, increased energy, and improved cardiovascular health – just to name a few. Avoid repeated overexertion since it can compromise your immune system. 7. Get Zinc. Zinc plays a critical role in our immune system and people who are deficient in zinc are more susceptible to pathogens. Great sources of zinc include shellfish (like oysters), red meat, chickpeas, lentils, and pumpkin seeds. Identify a few foods you like that contain zinc, and ensure you’re regularly eating those foods to avoid a zinc deficiency.
