By Jamie Barrie W hile in some states drivers are asking to, “fill it up”, it appears that those in California are plugging it in, it was has become a geographic phenomenon where California reigns supreme. California’s zero-emission vehicle sales requirements have always skewed the sales results for more fuel effi- cient cars for the West Coast State. Residents of Califor- nia have embraced and purchased the majority of electric and plug-in hybrids cars in the U.S. for some time now. In June alone 13,772 cars with plugs were sold in the U.S. with 7,161 going to buyers in California, which is 52 percent of the market share and is more than the other states in the U.S. combined. This is not a new fad as this is an increasing trend that has been happening for some time. Since 2010 Californians have purchased 46 percent of the 467,000 electric cars sold in the U.S. California has a ZEV mandate that is in effect until 2018. While it only applies to Fiat Chrysler, Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, and Toyota everyone knows they need to keep their technology moving. The Clean Air Act allows states to either follow the federal requirements or adopt California’s vehicle emission regu- lations. Nine other states adopted the California regula- tion: Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont. In 2012, California adopted its most recent regulations, requiring that 15 percent of new vehicle sales in 2025 be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) making California the training ground to ensure that emissions and other requirements are approved for the other 9 states with similar programs as automakers must start selling zero- emission vehicles in each of those states by 2018.
