Key Client Appointments

We first worked for Birmingham City Council earlier in 2022 for The Birmingham Children’s Trust at Bridgelands in Kitts Green. This refurbishment of an existing building into a transition base for young people was completed on time and impressed the Council. This was followed by securing the Dolphin Centre, a £1.4m extension and refurbishment of a Women’s Refuge. We see the growing relationship with Birmingham City Council as a key client account for 2023.

Over the last three years we have expanded our exposure to the HE sector. Previous HE clients included Westminster and Wolverhampton Universities. We started working with the Coventry University Estates team with fire protection works. This established relationship led to us securing HDTI Building a £240,000 high end commercial fitting out project, which provided our first 100% customer feedback report.

Throughout 2022 we have always had a construction presence within the wider BWC NHS estate. Our projects range from £4.8m Parkview Clinic extension, audiology department refurbishment to urgent and backlog repairs within the main Steelhouse Lane building. The relationship is strong, with pipeline works secured into next year.

A key part of our business is working on PFI building and supporting FM consultancies. Our Framework with Imagile PS now extends to over four years. With annual reviews, there is a constant drive for improvements in delivery and end-user satisfaction. Schemes includes £1m toilet and shower replacement to a Government building, £1.9m pipework replacement to Birmingham Treatment Centre at City Hospital and emergency MEP repairs to healthcare estates.

Project Highlights

Dolphin Centre Ward End Birmingham The building is a women’s refuge and support centre which serves one of Birmingham’s deprived areas. We started works in Summer 2022. The £1.4m project for Birmingham City Council includes an extension to the rear, all areas refurbished to deliver new café, teaching and workshop areas. These will ensure the centre has increased facilities to help women in the area. Works are scheduled to be completed in April 2023.

CiF/Salix Summer Works In the Summer of 2022 the MEP undertook the highest number of school closures in our history. We successfully completed seven projects to a value of £2.65m in just eight weeks. Funded through CiF or Salix funds, each project consists of the replacement of ageing boilers with new energy efficient equipment. The scope ranges from simple boiler changeover to wholesale replacement plant rooms. Due to the intensity of the works, we spend six months planning and mobilising to ensure schools open for the winter term.

Parkview Clinic Moseley Birmingham This scheme is the largest secured by BSN Group in 2022. The first phase of the £4.8m extension was successfully handed over in October. The Birmingham Children’s Hospital young person’s mental health facility, provides care for young people from across the Midlands. Our works were undertaken adjacent to the facility; throughout our site team excellent communications and approach ensured there have been zero incidents with a high quality handover experience.

Birmingham Treatment Centre Working through Imagile PS for Sandwell and West Birmingham NHT Trust, the £2.1m replacement pipework scheme is one of our most challenging MEP projects. The existing plastic pipework is failing leading to a wholesale replacement in copper. The multi-phase programme over 18 months has been carefully planned to avoid closure of the operating theatres and wards. Evening and weekend working is being utilised; however working hours are reduced to allow hygienic water treatments before handover back to the hospital.

Secured 2023 Projects

Secured 2023 Projects

Woodlands Bereavement Centre Birmingham Women’s Hospital Our first project for Birmingham Women’s Hospital is the Woodlands Centre at Birmingham QE Hospital. The £2.8m new build scheme is due to start in January 2023. The quite striking designs are from PHD Architects in Birmingham. As with most schemes lately, our tender cost was above the budget; we proposed the use of lightweight SFS leading to cost and time savings ensuring the project met overall budget and ensured this important project progressed.

Nottingham Student Accommodation Early in 2023 will see us starting the negotiations to commence the construction of new Student Accommodation building in the centre of Nottingham. The £7m+ scheme is very challenging as squeezed between elevated tramline, stream to rear and facing the busy Queen’s Road artery into the city. The client has chosen us due to our innovative approach in the use of lightweight construction and off- site modular construction. Enabling works are starting soon and full site set up in the coming months.

Bushey Fields Hospital Dudley We have just secured a £4.1m refurbishment of Kinver and Wrekin Wards for Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This fast-paced mental health refurbishment and upgrading is due to start in January 2023. The appointment continues our specialism in the mental health sector and expanding our reach in healthcare across West Midlands.

Jewish Free School Harrow London The MEP team are just starting a £1.4m complex reroofing and services upgrade to a large school in London. The roof contains ventilation ducting, AC units and associated plant. Everything is being removed to allow replacement roof and then rationalised with new equipment. We used our Matterpoint scanning tool to survey the roof providing an essential as existing layout which would have been impossible with traditional photographs. Over 90 scan points produced the detailed scan which also provided a 360° walkthrough survey.

Charity Dinner in aid of Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity In September we held our annual charity dinner. Through our subsidising the evening’s drinks and canape reception and evening activities; this led to the total raised to £25,000. The evening was supported by our supply chain, consultants and clients with raffle prizes and generous donations. “The whole event was incredible” said Helen Miles, head of corporate partnerships at our charity. “The team at BSN put so much work and resources into making the evening a success, and we’re incredibly grateful for their ongoing support”

Ben Collins Dudley’s Rising Star Boxer We have been financially supporting a local young boxer Ben Collins for a number of years. Richard Summers MEP Director has seen him grow into a regional and national finalist in the under 70kg weight Category cumulating in almost winning the England Boxing National Youth Championships last year. He is a future star and so pleased our faith in him has led to a potential professional career.

OVER £34k RAISED

Charity Golf Day In April we held our annual Building Services Now Golf Day at Hawkstone Park near Shrewsbury. The great day included Wolves Football legend Steve Bull MBE as our host, adding some amusing football stories. Through some generous auctions and raffle prizes we raised an amazing sum, £6,200.00. This money was passed to our favoured Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity.

Dragon Boat Race We took the plunge and entered this year’s Dragon Boat race in aid of Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Slightly anxious about sinking, fortunately we were supported by JRA Consultants, Second City Electrical and BK Plus accountants for joining team BSN. Didn’t make the final but won best dressed team!

In The News

Ground breaking at Dolphin Centre Birmingham We secured local press coverage for the ground breaking ceremony for the Dolphin Centre project. The piece was covered across all local media channels. Also we had some nice comments: Liam Byrne MP, who represents the Birmingham Hodge Hill Constituency and is Chair of the East Birmingham Board, said: “Having helped the Dolphin Centre draw up their funding bid I’m delighted to see work starting. This project is a key a part of our East Birmingham Regeneration Plan to transform Hodge Hill and make it an even better place to live and work.”

Parkview Clinic Birmingham Ground Breaking Press Coverage We worked closely with the Birmingham Children’s Hospital PR team to actively promote the Parkview Project. The Clinic has a fabulous story in helping young people with mental heath issues and one of the best in the Midlands. Hoping for some take up, then like buses, all the media turned up. BBC Midland Today, ITV Midland News and Heart FM all provided full daytime coverage. A great result and brand placement for BSN Group on regional TV and radio.

Winners at the Black Country Chamber of Commerce Awards Ceremony Our first award for the team in our history. The Small Business of the Year award was the most highly contested with eleven other finalists. At a wonderful evening at Wolverhampton Racecourse we were called up to pick up the award. The team were delighted to win. It is great to be acknowledged and rewarded by third party assessors which covered multiple industries and sectors in the area. There was lots of press coverage in October and the awards sits in the office, waiting for the next win.

Saving Christmas by Building Santa’s Grotto A couple of weeks ago we received a panic phone call from Helen Miles at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. She had been let down by a potential sponsor who had promised to build Santa’s Grotto. With only days before opening, could we help out? Of course we said yes and immediately sprung into action. We sourced the shed, arranged delivery and a couple of ‘santa’s helpers’ to build it, all just in time for the arrival of Santa. Christmas for the children at the hospital was saved. Well done to the BSN Team.
